Just another Gas Mileage Question????

Just another Gas Mileage Question????

Postby 93stallion302 [OP] » Jan 26 2012, 1:30am

Ive had my 2001 Silverado 2500HD 6.0L for a few months already.

From what I have read on here, my gas mileage seems to be off a bit from most.
The truck still had OEM plugs and Fuel Filter when I bought it. Truck was avg about 10mpg. 13 on the highway 8-9 on the street. The truck has 265/75/16 Nexen Rodian Tires and the tire pressure is at 60psi. I have recently put new plugs and fuel filter in it, and the mileage didnt increase at all. I was wondering what things should I be looking at if any to get some better mileage. I run 87 Octane all the time.

Is the mileage what it is and I shouldnt expect better or is there anything I should be looking to replace that maybe the culprit?

I also notice that cruising on the highway at a steady speed the truck feels help back. Feels like its not running freely. C/E light is not on. Truck only has 90K miles.

Any advice would be greatly apprecited

60 psi....are you nuts? Before you tell me what the max psi allowed is (because I know, I looked it up), my tires have a max allowable psi of 80; I run mine at 33 - 35 psi. Having your tires with that much air pressure is terrible for the wear. You should be more concerned with having to replace them due to over-inflation rather than 1 -2 mpg you are losing.

If those tires are 10-ply's (load range E), then 60 psi is about right. I run my Mastercrafts at 50 pounds and have gotten over 40,000 miles out of each of the last 2 sets. Heavy trucks and stiff tires require more psi than others.

OP, I think you're about where you're gonna' be with your MPG. My '03 gets 13-14 on the highway if I'm real gentle on her, and 8-10 around town or when pulling a trailer. The only way I know you're going to improve your mileage dramatically is to buy a diesel.

I see your point. On the other hand, he didn't list the model number/name of the tire. Then again, who buys trucks for their awesome gas mileage?

The rear axle ratio will hurt mileage. Often a 2500 will have a 4.10 rear axle and if that whats in there, that will eat into the mileage.

Look in the glove box and list all RPO codes on the label that start with a G and I can look up the ratio.

Didnt buy the truck for its gas mileage, but figured if I could improve it, why not? If it is what it is then so be it.

I think someone here mentioned that all 6.0L engine are built with using premium 91 octane fuel, and that alone may bump you a few MPGs.

I've tried it, and it doesn't do squat.

The 6.0, throughout it's life from 2000-2012, gets crappy mileage... it's just the tradeoff for a long-lasting, powerful engine.

And yes, the recommended tire PSI for these trucks is 80 PSI in the back, and 55 PSI in the front. Not sure what GM was thinking, but that's what they put on the sticker.

Everybody pissed and moaned about that 'possible' new body style, but if you want increased gas mileage on the truck, they're gonna have to create something a bit more aerodynamic; something far away with the 'brick pushing air' look.
