K&N oil filter: really?

Postby too tall [OP] » Aug 22 2011, 10:02pm

Talk me off the cliff. I ordered an armload of K&N HP-1017s for my 2007 Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.0 Max thinking I'd have in my hands some a bit larger than an apple. Grumble.

At the risk of sounds terribly naieve. Really?!!

Hmmmm dont really understand your post, but may I ask why K&N? much better filters out there, I run Bosch premium on my wifes escape my sierra and my cbr 929, cant beat the price and they are near identical to pure one filters, well bosch owns them.

Not certain I understand it either. Can you explain yourself further, OP?

Apologies for not being clear. I was feeling grumpy.

The physical size of this K&N filter is shockingly small compared to what I use on my Nova or old Chevy PU.

It is TINY!!!

With K&N, you're getting better filtration, plus better flow of air- the best of both worlds!

Also, the K&N (and any other...AC Delco, Amsoil, Purolator, etc) are small by design for this truck. It tucks up next to the oil pan, and won't get clipped by a rock or other obstacle when 4-wheeling. There are some longer ones that will fit, but I am not sure the filtration will be significantly better.

I really need to put a K&N in my '08 Silverado 5.3. The last vehicle I replaced the stock air filter with a K&N and got a 2mpg improvement. Not expecting that much of an improvement on my truck but I'd be happy with a 0.5mpg improvement!

Just realized you were talking about the OIL filter. For some reason I was thinking air. I have no experience with their oil filters. However, I do trust K&N and I imagine it's a great oil filter.

The power of wishful thinking is amazing, isn't it.

One more time: It's been proven again and again by actual testing that mileage improvements with changes in air filters are a MYTH.

Why is that? Think about it. The fuel system is closed loop. It's designed to use fuel to produce a 14.7:1 air:fuel mixture skewed to very slightly lean so that cats have a bit extra O2 to do final cleanup. No matter WHAT air filter you put in there, the mixture is CONSTANT because it's set by the O2 sensors and the ECU. Therefore for any given power output, YOU USE EXACTLY THE SAME AMOUNT OF FUEL. Exactly how the air gets into the engine doesn't matter one damn bit.

The myth has a basis in fact, albeit 50 years ago with carbureted engines. Because they couldn't be perfectly equalized for incoming air restrictions, they would indeed lean out a little bit (thus producing better mileage) when someone replaced a dirty, restricted filter with a new one. But that all went out the window the moment that the combustion process went closed-loop.

Thanks for the replies, it is reassuring to hear from other owners that the size does not matter. Wait. I said that out loud ;)

FWIIW Kudos to K&N for the removal "nut", that is a great design feature.
