Noisy Lifter

Noisy Lifter

I have one or more noisy lifters in my 6.0, After a while it quiets down but it just anoys me. Should I just live with it or is there an easy fix. How hard is it to "rebuild" the complete top end of the engine?

Have you tried any oil additives? MMO or lucas or even the old trans fluid trick?

what year is it? mine made the same noise and after researching a bit found out its not a lifter, about 80% of the 6.0 and 5.3 motors from 99-03 have a piston slap. the bores werent as tight as they should have been and it makes the truck sound like its got a bag of marbles in the bay on cold start and starts to quiet down when the pistons warm up. its a normal thing and have yet to hear anything about it damaging the motors or effecting the life of the motor. there just a little noisy is all, worst case... just tell everyone its a diesel lol

Thanks. I talked to a friend who is a mechanic and he said about the same thing. He said it could be a clogged oil port and suggested putting a quart of transmission oil in it for a while and then change the oil. I might try that. If it that doesn't work, I'll just live with the noise until it blows. Has any one tried this?

Not sure about the whole trans fluid thing...but if you find out it is a lifter, pulling the heads and replacing the lifters is a fairly easy task besides having to pull the engine apart. But at least it can be done with the engine in the truck. As far as piston slap is concerned, my 04 has never had any problems but it could very well be a slightly to large bore. Aluminum block machining is very different from iron blocks so it might have taken a few years to work out. If you want to mess with the slap issue, that will require pulling the engine, and a lot more cash. So if it reallys bothers you go for it but if it only happens a little at starts it shouldn;t hurt the cylinder walls to much.

Um I don't know that noticable lifter noise is an automatic part of owning a GM engine...My 04 with the 6.0 has 123000 miles on it and I have never noticed lifter noise at all. Also the block has nothing to do with valve train. The lifters are hydraulic rollers and if they are making noise it either means they dont have oil in them or the valve springs are too weak and allow the lifter to hop some.

Noisy Lifter

Postby Machster69 » Sep 21 2012, 3:33am

I can assure you i have owned four of these. 3 have has lifter noise at startup, my 08 has never made the slightest tick... Weird? Its only a second or two on my current 2010 and there are tsbs on it(meaning it is extremely common)! I still love them!!! I would consider the lifter part of the engine/block... And its definitely an oil issue. After sitting the oil jus isnt in the top of the block... Makes sense to me! Once primed up(1-2 sec) its fine :)

My 2011 Silverado 5.3 had a lifter tick at cold start that lasted only a few minutes, then went away. When I did my first oil change, I put in Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic. I have not had a lifter noise since that oil change. That was about 6K miles ago.
