just need some input

p0300 situational

Postby noah2500hd [OP] » Apr 17 2012, 12:14am

2002 2500 hd 6.0l had originally p0174 and p0300 lean bank and random misfire. I cleared p0174 and it hasnt come back (200 miles or so) so ill put that aside for now. I did the fuel filter, air filter, oil and filter, cleaned MAF, new plugs and wires (ac delco irid). I have no noticable performance issues. The ses coms on only at highway speeds and only when im up around 2500 rpm. The only solution with those symptoms ive seen online was a guy had the same truck with 2 weak valve springs. I dont expect anyone to give me a def. fix im just looking for some info on top of what ive read here already. Also, i jus bought truck recently and im pretty sure its all stock, no special tuning or anything. Thanks

i forgot to mention that there is a warped exhaust manifold and a few broken studs, could this be the problem? Also carb cleaner around intake and hoses show no rpm changes.

I have seen several 6.0 trucks through my shop with higher rpm misses. Most of the time it needed a mass air flow sensor and a crank relearn to fix it. I have seen a few intake manifold gaskets leak too. There is an updated gasket out from GM.

I would start by spraying around the manifold when the engine is stone cold and then when it's hot. If your scanner shows live data, it's better to watch for a change in short term fuel trim while spraying. RPM isn't always a great indicator. If you don't have access to data, disconnect the IAC (if you have a throttle cable truck) prior to spraying

Ohm check the injectors too. Look for all of them to be within a few tenths of an ohm.

A crank relearn will need to be done with a factory capable scan tool

Had same problem... Crank relearn fixed it. Takes a shop with proper tool less than 5 minutes. My shop did not even charge me. GM states to do a relearn after any tune up work.

Hey thanks for the replies. I unplugged my MAF, held the gas at 2500rpm and the code didnt come up so i plugged back in and tried again and there it was. I had already cleaned the MAF but didnt notice until now that it is a Delphi brand not AC Delco. Also when i did the tune up the plugs were not factory either, they were Autolite coppers so im thinking the previous owner had some codes that they were trying to fix cheap. So I guess my next question for you folks in the know is; is a crank relearn needed, or should i at least for the heck of it, for the new plugs, wires and or MAF? or should i just go buy a new AC Delco MAF and call it a day? My brother has a similar truck (5.3 same part number) so i can swap it out with his to see if that will solve it. Thanks again.

Swapping the MAF is a good idea. I think Delphi might make the sensor for delco so I wouldn't worry about the brand.

If you haven't done so already, the copper plugs need to go.

And I would definitely do a crank relearn before putting any parts in. Call around and find a independent shop with an updated snapon scanner. They should be able to do it for pretty cheap.

So what exactly is a crank relearn? I called my local dealership, and he was highly skeptical that a crank relearn would do anything for the truck. In fact, he was so sure that it wouldn't help, he didn't even offer to do it, which is strange, since this dealership is your typical "stealership"- they'll do anything to make a buck or two.

He doesn't know what he is talking about. In all my years of wrenching and the last five of being a GM master tech, it's the very first thing I will do when a truck comes in with these symptoms.

Make sure your engine is healthy prior to doing it. There are several wide open throttle applications that need to be done.

It basically just relearns the location of ckp pulses and any variations that have developed.
