Vortex 6.0 vs 6.6 Duramax diesel

Postby adowillys [OP] » Feb 27 2012, 9:27pm

Hello everyone I'm in the market to buy a Silverado 2500 HD. My dilemma is gas or diesel. I'm gonna be hauling my TT fully loaded weight is 7000lbs. I don't want any bugging down going up a steep hill and was wondering how the gas engine would handle the load. Ti appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Vortex 6.0 vs 6.6 Duramax diesel

Postby wheeler82 » Feb 27 2012, 10:49pm

Well there are allot of variables at play. First off depends what u wanna spend really, if money isn't an issue I'd go with the dmax, although I feel the 6.0 will pull that kinda weight no problem at all! Is your TT a bumper pull a 5th wheel or bumper pull? Bottom line is either truck will do fine but you will get better mileage pulling it with the dmax.

+1

The 6.0 will haul it just fine, but the Duramax is the best choice. You won't be disappointed either way, but if you've got the extra cash, go with the diesel.

I appreciate the responses. I will be pulling a bumper TT not a 5th wheel at this time anyway. I'm just wondering if it's worth spending the extra money for a dmax. If I'm gonna get better gas miliege on the dmax than on the gas 6.0 it might be worth it I think.

The Duramax is a $7500 option, so unless you're traveling cross-country a lot, you may never see the fuel savings vs. a gasser. However, diesel may be a lot cheaper than gas in the coming months, if gas prices continue to rise.

The Duramax will last longer, and will have a better resale value than a 6.0, but it's a higher up-front investment. Let us know what you end up doing...

Re: Vortex 6.0 vs 6.6 Duramax diesel

I just ordered my new Silverado. I had the same concerns regarding gas vs. Diesel. I drive 20,000 miles a year for work with about 800 pounds of cargo at all times. I also tow a 5th wheel 10,000 pound camper about 6 times a year. I opted for the diesel for power and mpg. I did the calculations with CT fuel prices and mpg difference of gas vs diesel and the break even point is 6 years. Talked to chevy owners and found gas to average 12 mpg and diesel to be 16 mpg. Anyone find any different?

get the 4:10s, the limited slip rearend and the 6.0 will work fine. The DMax is still the preferred rig, but keep in mind its about $8150 as a package more than the gas (worth every penny, but money is money). The diesel gets better MPG, than gas, diesel costs about $0.50 more per gallon here for me, more in winter.

Ok, to the nuts and bolts... I can do 65mph up a 6% grade towing #9500... so 6.0 is NOT a problem.
I get about 10mpg on flat ground towing that much, about 8.5 mpg towing #12000.

I appreciate all of your comments. Based on your comments and the comments of people i know that own Dmaxs, I've decided I'm gonna make the Dmax my number one choice. I do plan on keeping my truck for a good while and although I probably will not be making cross country trips I do plan on hauling my TT a lot and here in the Northwest we have a lot steep hills. If I cannot find a Dmax to fit my budget I might end up with the Vortec 6.0 gasser. Now I have go look for a Dmax!!! I'm so excited I will let you guys know what I get!!!! Thanks again.
