I'm like you. I changed everything over to synthetic, front diff and the rear diff are low viscosity synthetic. Tranny, engine and transfer case aswell. I always monitor tire pressure also, and an amsoil air filter as I think its the most advanced filter out there. This is all you can do to squeeze out alittle more out of her.

Good analogy with the water.
Easy on the breaks too. Guys hard on their breaks tend to use more fuel. Momentum wasted is fuel wasted.

So I'm new here and this is my first Chevy truck. I installed a cold air intake and new exhaust. My question is, do I need to disconnect the battery or is that's thing of the past?

Hi Bb84,

I "assume" you mean disconnecting the battery to reset the computer. The answer is No... The newer trucks since 1996 use the OBD II diagnostic ECU... The computer will figure things out over a couple days of driving...

I hope this helped, :D

amsoil dealers will try to tell you how much you save money by switching to their product, and how much more efficient it will be.

factor the high cost of amsoil to the very little, if any gain from amsoil, and you'll more than likely be spending more than you are really "saving". been there, done that. avon, for men I say!

take the "drive it like an old man" advice. it is the only method that really pays off, plus, you don't have to buy any boutique products to do so!

Hi Alex,

I hesitated in replying to this thread... But I'll add my two cents... I too have a 6.0L in a 2005 Silverado. I added a cat back exhaust, CAI, new plugs, new wires, and new oxygen sensors (4 of them). The mileage gain was maybe 1/2 mile per gallon. I also use synthetic oils, and premium gas. I'm also using the OLM (oil life monitoring) system GM installed on my truck. So I do not change every 3,000 miles. Again, over time I will save some money on oil changes, but that will not effect your mile per gallon per se... This is where a good oil and filter, will save on maintenance costs over time...

My driving habits are aggressive... Now, where I've personally seen an improvement with power and gas mileage (1.5-2.0mpg) is with Lew giving me a pro tune for my specific truck. I purchased a Hypertech Max, but did not see a lot of mileage improvement. However, with the Diablo InTune, then data logging for Lew, he was able to get a good mileage improvement for me. I have not, changed my driving style. If I would, I'd probably see more improvement. But I like to feel the power and hear the roar of the exhaust on my truck... So...

If you figure a Diablo InTune, and then a Lew tune, the price will be around $435.00. I'm assuming the InTune for $300.00. You probably can find the InTune for less on the web with a little searching...

Link: diablew

If you get 40 to 50 more miles per tank (2.0mpg improvement). That in turn gets a "savings" of $13.00 to $14.00 per tank over a set distance traveled, it would take you about 33 tanks of gas to pay for the tune and programmer. If you use 2 tanks per month, then it will take 15 to 16 months to pay for the Tune and programmer.

How did I get those "savings"?? If right now, you get 13 mpg. Then 20 gallons takes you 260 miles. If you get 15mpg, then 20 gallons will take you 300 miles. 40 miles further. If you drive 12,000 miles per year at 13 mpg you will use 923 gals @ $4.00 = $3,692 per year on gasoline. At 15 mpg you will use 800 gals @ $4.00 = $3,200... So you'll pay for the InTune and a Lew tune in one year.... If you get 2mpg better mileage... and drive 12,000 miles per year...

I hope this all helped, :D
