5.3L vs 6.2L

5.3L vs 6.2L

Postby jfusco20 [OP] » Aug 16 2011, 2:39am

I have a 2011 GMC 1500 with a 5.3L that I am getting rid of. I was wondering what the 6.2L was like in gas mileage and performance? I have to choose between getting another 5.3L or a 6.2L! I want to get the 6.2L for the horsepower! Just concerned with gas mileage and what kind of octane needs to be run in it?! Also what kind of upgrades would be best for the 6.2L?

I'd have to go for the 6.2L to get those 400 horses if I were in your position. Judging by a lot of the posts that I've read, it seems to be very similar in mileage to the 5.3L (if you can keep your foot out of it  ) There's a lot of info on different MPG's in this post, let me see if I can link it...

I know it says 6.0L, but there a few posts on the 6.2L in there...

Just out of curiosity, why are you getting rid of a 2011 with a 5.3L? Is the truck totaled or something? Anyway to answer your questions, I have 6.2L and I get around 14mpg combined highway and in-town. The truck recommends premium and thats what I run (91 octane). I used to run 89, but I can honestly say it runs smoother and has better acceleration with the 91, so thats what I would recommend. The engine is extremely strong stock, and i'm sure if you make some performance mods it would be a monster. I love the truck and the engine.

^^2nd that! I also have the 6.2L and love the power from it stock. I would run 91 octane if you get one, i have heard of a few people getting knocks from runnning 89 for awhile. The problem is keeping your foot out of it for mpg lol. Im looking at a cam swap, headers, full exhaust, and DiabloSport Trinity Programmer for performance mods.

I am not sure if I am getting rid of the truck just yet! I brought it back to the dealer with a drive train rattle. It only happens when the truck goes from running 8 cylinders to running 4 cylinders. They can't figure it out and has been back 3 or 4 time already. I thought about using the lemon law on it but not to sure how that all goes! A group of GM engineers want to look at the truck on the 15th of September and see if thay can figure it out! If they can't fix it then I would like to get a 2012 GMC Sierra with a 6.2L, in midnight blue metallic and all the options that my truck has in it now! I don't want to go through this again by getting another 5.3L.

You can turn active fuel management off with a handheld tuner.

I've have only used 93 octane in mine since I purchased it. When I read the owner's manual I remember it saying that 91 is recommended but that you can run a lower octane is no spark knock is heard. As fore performance, I had never driven one with a 5.3L, this is something that you should decide from a test drive. What someone else says or thinks might differ from your opinion is... but I bet there is a bit of a difference between the two. Fuel mileage in town for me is 13-13.5. I have no hwy driven yet to tell. I was supposed to be in Hatteras NC this week and was planning on taking the truck down but Irene washed the road out so that went out the window lol. Not sure when I can give my hwy results yet. Maybe next month.
Onstar says I am averaging less than 3 miles a day  HAHA

I have owned several 5.3L and decided to step up to a 6.2L. Very happy I did! I'd suggest getting a 1500(less weight) unless you are doing some heavy towing. I averaged just under 17 mpg with my old 5.3 and get a little over 15 mpg with the 6.2. The power of the 6.2 will keep you smiling and you won't miss the less than 2 mpg difference. ;)

6.2 equipped 1/2 tons come with a 3/4 ton rear end so you have enough to some serious towing . It also comes with rear disc brakes.
