Will it crank? If not, definitely look at your terminals. I've seen several vehicles that intermittently crank, and the cables and/or ground wire have been corroded or loose.

I have essentially the same truck with the same problem. (02 GMC 2500 with 8.1) Mine does it rarely and will typically start right up if I turn the key all the way off and try again. If I leave the ignition on and keep trying it will turn over and over but never start. Seems to be more common when it is cold and damp. I live in the foothills east of Stockton CA and the summers here are warm and dry and I rarely have the problem in the summer. When I take my trailer over to the coast (Cooler and damp) it will do it almost every morning. Once the truck is warm, it will start right back up after a shut down. When I get back to a warmer and dryer climate it is also fine. Drives me nuts, and my local GMC shop is stumped... No check engine light and my code reader never comes up with anything. So far it has never left me anywhere, so I am dealing with it. Would love to hear if somebody has figured this out...

New to the site but not the 8.1. I have a 2002 Silverado HD, Mine used to do this as well when it had about 100k on the clock, not a single code was ever thrown. Ended up throwing a crank sensor in it and the problem went away. I was amazed that a bad crank sensor never once produced a code but thats what fixed it. I have another100k since then with virtually no problems.

yep crank shaft position sensor

Hot start issues, loss of power while driving also,

2001-2006 8.1 liter, CPS was recalled on 2007-2008

mine had the same issue for about a month before it finally threw a code.

No start, but crank is usually the fuel pump relay, get a spare too, when it won't start, pull the fuse cover and rap the fuel pump relay with your knuckle a few times. Start truck. The cover shows relay and fuse positions. Sometimes wiggling the relay helps better. When it gets worse, replace the relay/fuse panel (this is after you have replaced the relay several times and the problem comes back), it has very small connection wires and printed circuits underneath, they go bad. On mine, the relays kept burning out after a few months (spare, remember?) then when that didn't do it we found the board beneath the panel was bad. Several dealers and independents couldn't find it either. GM relays are within pennies of the local parts slinger outfits too, but much better quality. The last owner had these problems and sold me the truck, I fixed it, they had a zillion tows to many of the shops. I fix things the old fashion way, and I don't believe a scanner when there is no codes. The crank sender usually causes hard start and intermittent shut off while running down the road and poor idle, not no start with crank. TIMINATOR
