202 2500 HD 8.1 LITER VORTEC ANY INHERENT PROBLEMS?

Postby Beehler [OP] » Nov 19 2012, 3:28am

Hi Members,

I recently bought a real cherry.
2002 GMC 2500, Allison 1000 AT, 4X4, 8.1 Liter Vortec with 21,000 miles.

Are there any inherent problems that I should expect to experience with this truck?

If so, any links or solutions any of you can provide will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

:O

21,000 miles??? Holy cow!

Well, there's a good chance that Allison will run until eternity, and those 8.1L engines seem to run forever, too :). Pics?

Thanks for the votes of confidence guys!

I have heard several tales of wheel bearing and transfer case problems.

The truck was one of those stories you hear, but don't quite believe. One owner who bought the truck new at age 70, passed away at age 80, and only used the truck to pull his 5500 lb camper....... but from all indications, the story was true. The owner even neatly folded the original window sticker and stored it in the owner's manual

I have not taken any pics yet, starspangled 6.0, when I do I'll let you know.

thanks again!!

Sure thing! The wheel bearings don't have a stellar track record, and yes, the pumps on the t-case can wear holes in the housing, but both of those are pretty rare.

But, like I said, that engine\tranny combo will run forever.

i bought mine on memorial day of this year. At the time of purchase it had 6724 miles on it. It is a 2002 2500hd with the 8.1 and allison in it. Now i have a little over 10,600 miles on it. so far no problems.

You guys found some real cream puffs there! I had difficulty locating my 04 with (only) 75,000 miles, of course it only has the lowly 6.0. Those 8.1`s are kinda rare, did not even see many of them listed (in a Crew Cab) when doing a regional search last Summer . Nice find.
