8.1L Issues

8.1L Issues

Postby 07BlackOps [OP] » Mar 13 2012, 4:25am

My buddies dad has a question to ask all the 8.1L owners. Hes considering purchasing one and got a good price on an 8.1L 2500 with the allison tranny. But he was wondering hes read lots of bad reviews on the 8.1L motor. How true are the rumors about the leakage and bad ring and bearings hes heard. its a 2002 with 176k miles on it. Hes mainly using it for a beater to haul his quads to his hunting cabin.

I haven't heard anything specific, but that's just me.

It looks like the 8.1L is an upgraded version of the old 7.4L GM used in the 90's. Hope this helps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Vortec_engine#7400

Not to jinx myself but Ive got an 8.1L and Ive never had any problems. Runs like a champ. Owner before me hauled a 5th wheel camper and never had any prolems. ive got 123,000 on mine. I love it and would take a 6.0 for anything. As for the Allison. BEST tranny Ive EVER had. I would recomend it to anyone except that its a gas guzzler. I get around 8-10 mpg all around. 10 highway on a good day with the wind at my back and 8-9 city. other than that and the fact parts are so Expensive( just relaced my exhaust manifold on pass side and the part alone was $600).

Interesting...I've never heard or read about bad rings, bearings or leakage issues on the 8.1. I read everything I could "Google" up prior to buying mine and have found little to no issues with them (sans the first couple years having a recall on the crank position sensor). They are based on the very proven 454 and I don't expect to have reliability issues with mine. As for replacement parts being expensive, try repairing a modern diesel (my Ford 6.0 Powerstroke set me back $6000 in motor repairs).

I also get a whopping 10 mpg with my 8.1, but am lifted with 35" tires and after owning the Ford diesel which only pulled 12 mpg (8" lift and 37's), I don't mind.

I'll be learning sooon of the expensive diesel repairs... I want a Duramax. And as for Ford Powerstroke. a buddy told me up untill i think 07 The Powerstroke was made by international. And he said that a major component of the motor needed repairs and the only way to fix it was to rip the cab off. So...Ford took over and redisigned the Powerstroke. Anyways I love my 8.1L and tell your budyy he will to.

I have an 8.1L in a 2001 GMC 2500HD for several years. The only mechanical issues I have had were a crankshaft position sensor and a shift module on the Allison transmission. I have a stock motor with a K&N Cold Air system, 4.10 ratio, 285/75/16 tires, and a Bully Dog triple tuner. I frequently average 10 mpg combined. The Bullydog shows me getting about 15-15 at 65 mph and 12 at 55. When I bought it in 2005 I figured the 8 to 10,000 dollar premium of a Duramax would pay for a shitload of gasoline. The engine seems to get better mileage at 2000 rpm than at 1800 so I should probably have put smaller tires on it.

have you noticed a big change with the 4.10 gearing and the bullydog? was really thinking about it but never could find any feed back on it cause this truck is kinda rare.

I have 2004 Silverado 2500 HD w/8100 & Allison. It has 2.5 inch leveling kit, 373 gear ratio, LT285/75R16 Goodyear Duratracs, & a K&N CAI. I have had NO issues with the truck or the engine/transmission. I use 1 quart of oil between oil changes which I go 5,000 miles between (it has since new, w/no external leaks). I get 12-13mpg unloaded & 7.5-8mpg when hauling, but have all the power you could ever want. I say very strongly, BUY IT!!!!
