Camshaft Position Sensor

Postby Wayne_baker1497 [OP] » Nov 19 2012, 1:37am

So I have a 2001 Silverado 2500HD 8.1L six speed manual trans. For the last couple weeks I have gotten a check engine light. I had my local parts house scan the computer and it comes up as a code P0342 camshaft Position Sensor Power Low. I have been calling around trying to get a new sensor and cannot find it anywhere. Autozone, Carqwest, and Knechts all say they cannot get it. Has anyone dealt with this problem? I found a lot of OLD forums (2005-2007) that talked about replacing the sensor and that it fixed the problem but it is no longer 2007. Can anyone help me with a part number or a place that I can order this sensor. Thanks.

So I just tried to checkout that part and none available. But what I did find is that the one for a 2002-2003 is available and there was a service bulletin for the 2001 models saying to change the sensor if a fault was found. Leading me to believe that the sensor for '01 was a bad design and it was updated in '02. I'd say take yours out and go to the parts house and physically look at the sensor for an '02 and if the same then try it and see.

Thanks for the reply. My head has been spinning over this and I did not think to check different years. I will check that out tomorrow and hopefully this will be behind me. Thanks again for the quick reply. Ill post again tomorrow with my results and hopefully save someone else the trouble in the future.

So another update on this camshaft position sensor. I checked the link you gave me for Advanced Auto Parts and tried to order the switch from them for the 2002 model year and they cannot get it. Looks like I am stuck going to the dealer on this one. Hope I don't have to give my first born.

Any GM dealers out there have any ideas?

The only place that had one in stock was the dealer and cost was $117.00, I was getting code 343 and even after replacing the sensor I still get the code.

You may want to try replacing the plug to the sensor. I got one from my gm dealer for about 45 dollars. It took me a long time to find my sensor but I finally found one person in the country that had one. I replaced my sensor a few days ago and it fixed my problem.

Camshaft Position Sensor

Postby Machster69 » Feb 18 2013, 6:32pm

Guys, another option is to get the GM part number on the part. Then cross reference for an aftermarket option with that number. Personally I like oem parts, which if you google that part number it will bring you to sites like partdirect and other wholesale dealer parts websites. They generally have parts for close to 40% less that local dealers...

I replaced mine with a gm part but my problem is that my part was discontinued. It took me months of calling all over the country and having my mechanic searching before I found one.
