'99 Chevy Z71 Silverado 1500 LS 5.3L Engine needed

Postby bbrown [OP] » May 22 2012, 3:42pm

A buddy of mine blew his 5.3L in his 1999 Chevy Z71 and needs a motor. Does anyone know a good source for one? From what I understand...just a good short or long block is needed and he want to find one with the lowest miles possible for under $1,000. Is there any hope here or should he just go ahead and buy a new one?

Eventually, but right now he just wants to swap it and get it running. He's not sure exactly what's wrong with the old one yet. He said the engine did not overheat...just lost power and began running rough so he kept driving slowly until he got to an exit from the highway and when it finally stopped it went off with a bang including a puff of smoke from under the hood. Still has oil in the sump but blew the dip stick out.

I would put a remanufactured engine in it or take the one out he has and have it rebuilt. It is a lot of work to replace an engine with one from a junk yard that you do not really know anything about.

We found an engine (5.3L) from a reputable dealer who pulls them and rebuilds and sells them. It came out of a truck and only had 25,000 miles on it. I have no idea what will come on the the engine. Does anyone know if these remanus have on them? I.E. Exhaust manifolds, Intake, Water pump, Spark plugs/Coils...????

Oh, Jordan,
When one goes to pull the engine out of the transmission, is the flywheel bolted to the torque converter?

Most junk yard take out used engines have most of the engine stuff left on them (intake, flexplate, water pump etc.) If it is a remanufactured engine they normally do not have that stuff. Usually it is just a "long block" that would only include the short block and heads (no oil pan, valve covers, etc.). The torque converter will be bolted to the flexplate (flywheel) with three (3) bolts or nuts. It depends on the set up on the converter.

Thanks for that. I'm gonna strip all that stuff off anyhow and if it needs to go on...I'll bolt it on. So how does one get the flex plate unbolted from the TC?

If I am remembering right, you have to remove the starter to get to them.

Has anyone heard of or had experience with "gotengines.com"? Gonna get an engine from those cats (maybe) but wanted to check them out first. I've seen bad and good online. Anybody?
