Search Function

Postby farside1 [OP] » Oct 22 2010, 5:34pm

Does anyone else get the "can't use this function at this time. Try again in a few minutes" when trying to search either your topics or your posts? I keep running into that problem. Am I the only one?

The exact error message will help me identify the problem.

Is it this?
Sorry but you cannot use search at this time. Please try again in a few minutes.

If that is the message, the issue is you are exceeding the user search flood interval which is the number of seconds users must wait between searches. This interval is checked independently for each user and is currently set to 30 seconds.

Because searches, especially ones where you choose to search the entire site, are so very resource intensive you are allowed to make 1 search per each 30 second interval. I hesitate to set that lower at the expense of the rest of the users browsing the site.

What does anyone else think? Are you willing to give up site speed for a shorter search flood interval? It is a trade-off.

Based on your comments, Austin, I would leave it alone. Overall speed is more important than the occasional error message.

yes. i agree with ekinmn. I was just worried that something was happening with the site. That is the error message I was getting. Just leave it as is and you can take down this post.

Well it's not really an error; it's a feature, a flood feature. Anyhow, I changed the message to read:

Sorry but you have exceeded the search flood interval. Please try again in one minute.

Hopefully that will ease the confusion.
