16" wheel on a 2012 2500HD?

Postby steved [OP] » Aug 09 2012, 1:12pm

OK, its nearly impossible to find a set of four 17" eight lugs wheels from a 2500HD. I can find 16" all day long. I am looking for a spare set to run as winter wheels.

My last truck (Dodge) came with 17", but they were required to clear the larger calipers and rotors that came from the change to the 3rd gen truck (in other words, 16" wouldn't fit).

Does the same logic apply to the GM? It pains me to spend $400 on a set of aftermarket rims when I see 16" OEMs for under $150 at times.

Old 8 lug wheels will not work on your 2012. Most 8 lug wheels have a 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern, 2011/2012 2500HD's have 8 on 180mm. I spent months looking for winter wheels with 8x180mm with the correct offset that didn't look like cheap ricer wheels. I ended up getting another set of stock forged aluminum take offs from E-bay. They were only $420 for all four, plus shipping of course. These wheels are over $1,000 ea at the dealer. I don't know if I can post an ebay link, but if you do a search on ebay you will find the seller from Salt Lake City, Utah who resells take-off wheels for very reasonable prices.

Your kidding me? They followed suit of Ford with a metric pattern? That's a shame...

There is a set right near me, alloys with 1k miles on them, tires included...$900. I'm really considering it, but I'd rather have a set of painted steel.

No, they really went metric when they increased the rotor and brake caliper size. Even painted steel wheels are a tough find in 8x180mm. Factory GM steel wheels for these trucks are close to $200 each through the dealer. I'd recommend doing what I did and look for factory take-offs on ebay. I live in Alaska so freight costs a fortune, but it was worth it to look on line for used wheels. There are a few aftermarket wheels out there that fit, but I'm not into the kiddie/ricer look, I want a tough truck wheel. Alcoa does make a great truck wheel that fits also.
