265/65R/18s to 275/55R/20s?

265/65R/18s to 275/55R/20s?

Postby 1BDZ71 [OP] » Jun 03 2012, 2:59am

So I am trying to figure out if I change from a 18" rim w/ 265/65R/18s to a 20" rim w/ 275/55R/20's how much "higher" will my truck sit? I'm assuming my gas mileage will decrease slightly as well?

I am worried about this because I just put in my 2" RC level kit, and my garage is VERY small. Wondering if I will have enough clearance. I plan on swapping my 18" LTZ wheels for a set of 20" Chrome wheels off a 2010 Tahoe.

Also, can anyone explain what the #'s in the tire mean?

Thanks guys.

265/65R/18s to a 20" rim w/ 275/55R/20's

265= width of tire in mm
65R=height of tire , but in a ratio from the width
18=rim

So a 265mm = 10.43 inches wide
65% of 10.43 = 6.78 inches tall times 2(above and below rim) = 13.5 inches plus rim 18 inches = 31.5 inches total/2 =15.7 from center to ground

275 = 10.8 inches wide
55% of 10.8 = 5.95 times 2 plus the wheel 20 inches = 31.9 / 2 = 15.95 from center to ground

^^^
Thanks. So I'd be gaining slightly under 2 inches in total height? 2 inches from the rim, but losing a little due to tire height?

or a higher profile...too much profile with no width gets you skinny tires lol

youll constantly hear people refer to getting bigger tires(and they are talking about taller) but they refer to the width of the tire

"Im gonna get some 305s for my truck" "Ima throw some 285 on her"

Well techincally thats not gonna make the tire taller...directly.... but the profile is based on the percentage of the width so INDIRECTLY yeh... the tires bigger

So like a 295/70/18 NTG would give me an additional 2 inches over my stock 265/65R/18s.

This is harder than I thought...BUT I think my garage can handle a 1/4" increase in ride height! :D

Re: 265/65R/18s to 275/55R/20s?

Postby jas1068 » Jan 31 2014, 2:27am

I drive a 2008 silverado z71 with the stock 18 inch wheels that are 265 /65/ 18 and I just bought a set of the LTZ 20 inch wheels that are 275 / 55/ 20. My question is since there is only .25 of an inch difference in height, do I still need to have my speedometer corrected? Or do I need to have my truck programed for the 20 inch wheels? My only concern here is for the accuracy of the speedometer, the height of the truck will not be an issue since it sits outside anyway.

Sorry, I am new to the forum.

Any help is appreciated.
