285/65/18 BFs TA?KO pressure

Postby O'Brien [OP] » Feb 02 2012, 11:42pm

Just fitted a set of these on my 2011 CC 4X4 and was interested in hearing from anyone running these on a NBS set up as to what pressure you run in yours. Currently I'm set at 40psi all around.I don't haul with the truck but tow a small 15 ft boat occasionally. I'm running a 1 1/2" front leveling kit as well. I was under the impression that anything less than 40 psi the tire would not be inflated up to design spec for its 10 ply E load rating. They track like a slot car with slightly more pavemnent feedback than the stock Bridgestone Dueler 265/65/18s did but very acceptible for a 10ply AT. All in all the truck looks great and stands proud on these BFs.Just haven't experimented around for a sweet spot as to the running pressure as I would like to get some feedback first.

Nice choice on tires. Your on the right track. Bump up to 50+ , drive it, drop to 45. Drive it . Notice things like braking, turning, etc. With that tire, 45 to 50psi should feel pretty good. I'm running 52psi on all 4 corners right now, on my 295/70/18 Nitto's. Just a tad rougher ride, but the truck really feels good driving it.

Thanks StarsnBars for piping in. Yea the shop and I had decided that 40psi would be a good starting point. I'm not as concerned as attempting to attain a softer ride with these as what pressure will benefit the tire life and design aspects. These BFs are some expensive little muthas but I bought these to afford a bit more aggressive appearance as well as increased aggressive cornering capabilities with minimal sidewall flex or slippage. That haven't dis-appointed.

If you know the load on your front and rear axles you can check the load rating table from the tire manufacturer and adjust the pressure for your truck unloaded and with various loads in the bed. For example on my truck the rear axle puts down 2800 lbs. and the tires are rated for 3195@80. I have roughly 1600@40 and with two tires they support 3200 lbs. or enough to carry the 2800 lbs. of the rear of the truck plus another 400 lbs. in the bed or a couple of heavy guys/gals in the cab. Not rocket science but it will get you the PSI that works for your truck. Don't know the load on your front and rear axle then spend $10 at a local CAT scale and get your truck weighed.

Sounds like the only logical approach elkhornsun. That said,we can almost determine with reasonable certainty that my 1500 doesn't weigh as much as your 2500 and therefore should not require anything in excess of 40 psi unloaded or carrying a light load. Thanks for your input.

OK...dig this....Just got off the phone with BF Goodrich and for my specific truck they list a pressure recommendation of 50psi all around. Go figure. Maybe recommended run pressure is a certain percentage of the max inflation pressure. The rep I talked to did/would not elaborate. So now what? Go with the manufacturers recommendation or trial and error a pressure setting?

Run under 40psi on that tire you will see alot of sidewall bowing and feel like your driving in pudding. :) All around regular driving 45 to 50psi. Towing 50 to 55psi. Heavy towing 55 to 58psi. I'm not trying to tell you how to manage your tires, just sharing what works good for me. :D Hope this helps,,

It does help StarsnBars. Your recommendation also corresponds to what I was told by the manufacturer rep. Matter of fact I already aired them up to 48 psi all around. Just haven't driven it yet. I'll post back up when I do. I appreciate all of the input. I want these little muthas to last as long as possible. A slightly firmer ride is acceptible for me.

I have 275/65/18s on mine and I believe they're all around 40psi at the moment. I've only had the truck for a month and a half. Let us know if you notice any difference between the ~40 and ~48...
