Tyre n Wheel options

Postby Capricorn [OP] » Jul 29 2011, 1:40am

Hi All,

I have just purchased my first American truck (2007 GMC Sierra 1500 extended cab 2wd)from Texas and it is currently being prepared to be shipped to me, here in the England :)

Just so you all know I have never owned a truck before and all my experience so far has been with European cars.

I have been trying to read up on what wheels and tyres I can install but quite frankly,I have ended up a bit confused.

I think I have the 17 inch wheels and my intention is to either get some bigger fatter tyres or just go up to 20's with wheels and tyres. However I do not want to lift the truck as some of you have. I like the standard height. Is this possible to?
Can some one please tell me what my options are? How big can I go with tyres on the standard wheels? Suggestions and advice pls :( :?

Your help is very much appreciated

If your weather conditions are snow with salt or ice melt (or I guess sea salt), I would go with the JR Racing Ribelle's. They are 20" silver painted that stands up to midwest winters and i don't have to switch them out in the winter. I put Nitto Grappler 275/55R20 tires on.
That's my vote.
That's a great truck you are getting. It's gotta cost a lot to ship it?

Snow isnt an issue for me. I have been reading posts saying bigger wheels make the ride rough(which is understandable) hence teh decision to stick with 17's and just try to get the biggest fattest tires possible
Can some one please advise what the max width is for standard 17 wheels? Do I have to get levelling kit installed?
C'mon guys! This was my first post. Help me out and excuse my ignorance ;)

Your stock 17" wheels should be 7.5" wide. Normally you can fit a 285/70-17 (33" OD) tire on that wheel, but with the added width, you also gain height which would require a leveling kit.
If it's 2 wheel drive and you just want street tires and not a Mud tire or all-terrain, I think there are other sizes available that will give you the width without gaining height like a 275/60-17 (30" OD). I'm sure there are other sizes, but I'm not familiar with 2wd truck tires.
Maybe this helps...
