Weight of stock tires and rims

Weight of stock tires and rims

Postby thenutter [OP] » Nov 25 2010, 6:56pm

I am trying to decide whether it would be worth it or not to go back to the original rims and tire size on my Silverado. I am thinking about hitting up a junk yard but I want to see if anyone here has the knowledge I am seeking. I want to know the weight of the stock rims, especially compared to my current ones at 100pounds a piece. I want the increased fuel economy plus I am tired of the rubbing issues I have and the reduced turn angle. I am not going to off road in a 2wd truck so there is no reason for me to have these off road tires except of course the bad ass look.

Tire rack and most all of the tire companies websites will advertise the weights of the tires you might be interested in and maybe someone on here has weighed their stock wheels to help you out.

33 in Nitto Terra Grappler and Ion rims, I forget how much the rims weight but the rubber comes in at 100 pounds per tire.

I know I end up with about 12mpg, and looking on a few websites I finally found my truck is rated at 12mpg. So I am not sure how much switching the tires will help with the fuel economy issue.

I would think cutting down on the rotational mass would have to help some. The less work the engine has to do to turn the wheels should = better millage.

Is 12MPG everyday or on HWY?

If you are getting 12 mpg reducing un-sprung weight will only help especially if you are dropping 50lbs a tire.

What? A 100 pounds? Mine are only 41 lbs for the stock rubber. Are you sure that is not wheel and tire?

Is anyone actually running 245/70/R16s? Thats what my door panel calls for, but those are the same tires on my Trailblazer and they just seem really small for such a big truck. I have been trying to sell the tires, but it is difficult since most people have them on their trucks so thats two vehicles jacked up. Plus balancing new tires, not sure if I really want to go through the hassel. If I can get over 1mpg increase, otherwise I will keep the look and get a tuner.
