2001 Silverado 1500hD Brake problems

Postby Manny011500HD [OP] » Feb 24 2020, 6:30pm

I am new to the Silverado forums i currently have owned my 01 Silverado 1500hd for about a little more than a year now. I recently replaced both my hydro booster and master cylinder a couple months back because it was leaking pretty bad from somewhere and needed to get back on the road as i use it for a daily driver to get to school. Prior to replacing the master cylinder and hydro boost, whenever i went over a bump about 40mph maybe more then slow down as soon as i go over it the brake pedal gets hard and literally won’t brake I haven’t had much of an issue now that i have replaced those parts but i encountered it today while driving on the dirt road literally i could not brake until the road got smooth that’s when i was able to brake. I still have yet to bled my brake but I’m sure that is not the cause of my problem. However since i brought the truck whenever i set the parking brake it works but the emergency brake light flashes on my dashboard.

Okay, so there are a few things here to address.

First off, welcome to the forum! Make sure to put up a post in the New Member section, and if you plan on doing any mods/upgrades to your truck, check out the "Under ConsTRUCKtion" thread - an example is mine linked below in my signature.

Second, it sounds like you should definitely bleed your brakes, it's possible you have air in your system. It sounds like your ABS is kicking in when you hit bumps or are on gravel. Is it making a sound when the brakes get hard - kind of like a grinding sound?

To my knowledge, whenever you put the parking brake on, the Brake light will flash on the dash. I have never used my parking brake - I don't believe they are useful unless you drive a manual.

It does not make any weird noises just a hard brake pedal but it does not do it on all bumps. if I try harder to brake its almost like the pedal pulsates. Currently I been meaning to replace my disc brakes as they are glazed and even with new brake shoes brake schreech won't stop even used brake pad lube. new disc brakes are pretty expensive for all 4.

Does it sound like the ABS is kicking on? that would be my guess.

Sounds like the ABS to me as well.
The hard pedal and pulsing are what the ABS does when its activated
I've read that they can go bad
