99-03 brake line recall?

99-03 brake line recall?

Postby jmchevy [OP] » Jan 28 2014, 4:27pm

Anyone know if theres still a chance GM will recall those trucks with rusted brake lines? I had to replace the lines on my 2002 Silverado after they burst due to rust.

There will probably never be a recall issued. The NTSB is aware of the problem, GM has a 'kit' to address it. But recalls are only issued if there are numerous reports of 'failure' due to the rusty brakes that create a safety issue.

They didn't issue a recall since the brake lines were only a problem in 10 or so states, states that use salt in the winter. I had all of mine go out last winter on my '03. I love how they use stainless steel for the exhaust but not for brake lines.

Well, I'll definitely be checking my brake lines for rust this weekend as I never considered this a problem on my '00. This year has been nasty for us in MN too.

I usually run 'er thru a carwash once or twice a month during the winter, one that does the underbody blast. (Provided its at least +15°F outside, which has not happened very much lately)

Just bought a 2003 1500 and was surprised by the excessive rust after I jacked it up. I could see that some of the brake lines were replaced, but the rear backing plates have big rust holes in them too. Wonder if this is why previous owner got rid of 85000 mile truck. At least I didn't overpay for it,so don't feel too bad.

I blew a brake line a few years ago, luckily I only went through a yellow light. It was at the very beginning of a 500 mile trip back to school after Christmas. Hammered away at it with my Dad all night and into the morning, After a nap I was back on my way in the afternoon.

I never even thought about letting GM know about it. It would have been nice if it prompted a recall.
