2000 Sierra 1500 4x4 z71 . I NEED something to keep tear end

Postby kenora [OP] » Apr 19 2020, 5:11pm

A couple of times a year i have to pick up a load of wood pellets or get a ipc tote 3/4 full of fresh water from the local supplier to my place. 10 km..county driving..
Yesterday I put 30 bags of pellets..that's 1200 lbs in the bed of my long box truck and another 30 in my enclosed trailer..
Holy crap.. it squatted to an inch short of the bump stop at the rear.. I shifted the bags in the bed forward and the bags in the trailer to the back to reduce the load on the rear axle and it was marginally better..allowed me to get the load home.. but still..its a trip I need to make 3 or 4 times a year so I definitely dont want or need a 3/4 ton.. I think I need something like sumo springs.
Has anyone installed them to deal with occasional "to the limit" loads?
If so what's your opinion or are there less expensive options?
Thanks

Less expensive option would be to make a couple trips each time, cutting the load in 1/2 will work wonders.

Sometimes delivery fees on bulk materials isn't that expensive either, get it right to your door and skip the multiple trips/time spent setting up.

Delivery out here is not an option... I have a steep twisty 1/4 mile long driveway.. when I had oil they would only send the guys that had been here after a truck rolled on the hill.. what a fuster cluck..
The pellets are not the biggest issue it's the bulk water.. 275 is gallons.. right now I can only take a half load and that's a strain on the wimpy springs.. I dont plan on overloading the truck... I just dont want it against the bump stops when fully
.legally..loaded.. looks like hell

You're really going to have to make multiple trips to be safe. 275 gallons of water is 2200 pounds, plus the container weighs 135 pounds...that's 2335 pounds. You just can't do it.
Furthermore, moving your load to the back of your trailer is not only dangerous, but extremely stupid. The majority of trailer weight should be over the axle(s) and forward. Loading up the rear of the trailer like that can lead to uncontrolled sway, even at low speeds, and flip the trailer and your truck along with it.
Rent a short "bobtail" truck with a liftgate and a pallet jack from Penske or Ryder and be safe instead!!!

And BTW....people will deliver anywhere....it just comes down to how much you're willing to pay....

Thanks for the input.. I did the math and am good for 1806lbs .. minus me at 200 lbs.. so should be 1600ish in the bed.
That's more than the 30 pellet bags =1200 lbs .. that squatted the rear end too much. I unhooked the trailer to unload 30 bags into the trailer.. and no it wasnt improperly loaded.. I had about 150 lbs at the hitch..
I'm.still looking for a real life review of the sumo shock
.thanks
