2003 AC issues, please help!

Postby Jdl3d [OP] » Aug 17 2020, 3:50am

Hello everyone, in advance I would appreciate any recommendations. My 2003 Silverados AC is failing me :-(. I am having a difficult time diagnosing the issue and any input would be great. So far I have checked all fuses including the relay, the compressor is still moving, the cannisters is still cold, I've replaced the blower motor and the resistor in the cabin. I've tested the electronic climate control and that functions properly. I'm at a loss without potentially having to go through the wiring. Any ideas or anyone had the same issue? I have not tried to recharge, but since the canister was cold and the lines were cold, I figured that wasn't it.

Welcome to the site...

So the issue is not getting cold air from the vents? If you activate the AC and the clutch on the compressor kicks on, safe to say electrical part of the system is fine. You'll hear a distinct light click when ti turns on, and can watch it as well if you have someone in the cab flipping the switch. You didn't say if you checked the pressure on both low and high though, and you can try on of those cheap DIY cans that have a gauge, or find a shop that has a proper manifold tool to measure, although the latter won't be free likely...The can may give you a good indication though, and some auto parts places may even have a manifold gauge you can "rent" out to check it yourself.

You could have a blockage in the line as well, which could indicate a more severe issue as the system is sealed...but I don't want to plant that thought in your mind just yet...

Sorry everyone. Thanks for the quick replies. There is cold air through the vents, but the blower is not operating.I see I didn't mention that.

In that case, you want to get to the harness or wiring for the blower motor and check electrical signals there in correlation with the switch... If that checks out, the blower has to be the issue.. You could possibly also power the blower on it's own if you had a 12v supply, just to confirm the module works without the vehicle.

Thanks @ricka182. I'll buy a meter and check the wiring. In the case where the blower is good but no power to it, what is the recommendation on where to start to check the wiring?

I'm nowhere near an expert on that, but I would suggest trying to find a wiring diagram for your truck, and following the circuit back to the fuse box. I would think, which can be dangerous at times...lol, but I'd think the wiring wouldn't be too hard to follow...unless you had a break in the wire in a section where it's buried deep in with other wires, but that would be unlikely.

So tested the wiring to the Blower motor and there is a current, checked the blower and it runs, and checked the power to the and from the resistor which is good. I just ordered a new relay, maybe it will help. For 10 bucks it's worth a shot. The wiring diagrams are way too complicated as I only know the surface repairs. Any one have any advice?
