46,000 Miles - Cabin Air Filter

Postby Delrio [OP] » Jan 09 2020, 2:56pm

This is the first vehicle I have owned with an in cabin air filter. Always thought it was a bit of a gimmick...

...I was wrong...

Changed it for the first time at 46,000

I would guess you could run a fan in your house through a filter for that long and find the filter to look similar. But, if you do have one, you had better change it more often than that. All it was doing for the past year is growing mold and spreading it through out your truck every time the A/C or heat came on.

Oh, I will definitely change it regularly from now on. While getting my oil changed, the dealer always asked me if I wanted the cabin filter changed and their cost seemed really high for such a simple change. So, I always declined and made a mental note to do it myself. ....and promptly forgot all about it....

Yah, they probably wanted $50. I am sure a DIY replacement is about $10

I have 50k on my 2016 and have never thought about it until now. I change my own oil so nobody asks about it. Thanks

For something so simple to do, it's amazing how expensive it costs at the dealership. I replaced mine when I bought my truck @ 50K miles and it looked even worse than yours. Definitely something that is worth replacing more often. I would guess that mine was never replaced in the life of the truck before I got a hold of it. Now it will be replaced more often, especially given the fact that I have a dusty driveway out in the country.

I changed mine at close to 40,000 miles and it was pretty dirty.

Here is a tip to prevent something falling down into the blower motor and making a hell of a sound like I did. Slip a piece of paper or cardboard under the filter before you slide it out so nothing will fall down into the blower, instead it will land on the paper. I had 1 small dried up leaf fall in there and it caused a noise like an airplane taking off after I put it back together. Luckily the shop vac was able to blow it back out of there.

I change mine every 10,000 miles. But depends on the conditions you drive in. I've also pulled the blower fan and cleaned that mass of dust gunk on the impeller

I change my wife's cabin filter every 20,000 miles
