AC Compressor doesn’t engage

AC Compressor doesn’t engage

Postby Battmarker [OP] » Jun 17 2021, 2:30pm

Hello I have a 2006 GMC Sierra 5.3L. My AC compressor won’t engage unless I give it a little tap with a wrench. Had a shop tell me it needs a new compressor but it’s not seized so I feel like it’s something else. Could it be the clutch?

Your AC is probably short-cycling (turning on/off every 5-10 seconds) due to a clog in the low pressure line or no refrigerant.
You happen to be 'tapping' the compressor when the short-cycling is occurring.
Get it evacuated and filled professionally.

The AC does not turn on at all with out me tapping it and even then it runs for a few minutes and turns off ans doesn’t come back. I just had it refilled professionally.

I have an 06 as well and the exact same issue. My A/C will work fine untill the engine heats up. AFter that as soon as the compressor cycles off it gives me trouble. I have a friend who is a very good mechanic. He noticed the "clutch gap" was a little big. Apparently heat makes the gap worse. He tell s me that if i pull the front plate off and remove the shims that will buy me a liitle time, but it will eventually need a new clucth or compressor. I want to just replace my clutch because that something i can do myself. I dont have the vacuum pump. The plate is only held by a 10MM bolt and normally comes off very easy, but as with everything i own, it's being difficult. i have a gear puller and plan on getting back on it today after work. i'll let you know how it turns out.

That was my exact problem the air gap. I pulled the clutch plate off and sanded down the shim back to spec, put it back together and now it works great. I never used a gear puller I used a bigger bolt then the one holding the plate on, tightened that tell it pushed the plate off. This is the video I used.

Except I went from the top and pulled off the air intake tube it was a lot quicker and faster.

i tried that longer bolt trick, but with everything that's mine, its difficult. my mechanic says he pulls these off all the time and never had any trouble with any of them, but remember, it's mine. i bent it up so bad i had to buy a new compressor clutch. $167 bucks later everything works great.
