AC Condenser... Known Issue???

AC Condenser... Known Issue???

Postby A_Ninja_Racer [OP] » Mar 11 2021, 2:25pm

Hey Guys, I have a 2016 Silverado with 50k Miles on it. On Tuesday I noticed that my AC wasn't Blowing Cold Air (#Florida Life) I took it into the Dealership on Wednesday and the Service writer says It's more than likely that it's the AC Condenser because they are notorious for cracking. Later that day he calls me up to confirm that it was in fact the AC condenser I still have my extended warranty so it's only costing me a hundred buck to have them fix it but I'm curious if this is such a well-known issue Is the replacement condenser an updated/revised version that resolves this issue or am I going to run into this in the next 5 years to 50k miles. Does anybody possibly have any information on this?

It always gets fun with those extended warranties... dealer knows its a chance to get labor $ without much resistance from customer.
I would have liked to see the "crack" in the actual pump housing, that's dubious to me.
What is FAR more likely is a crack in a high or low pressure line or connector, which would bleed-off refrigerant.
What is another most-common AC problem is "short-cycling", where the low pressure line gets plugged with moisture/crud and blocks the line.
The AC pump will go on/off every few seconds. This normally is just a simple evacuation and refill.

Cracking condensors is a known issue with the early K2xx trucks.

Yup. Known issue for sure, but IIRC mostly involving 14-15 trucks and was mostly resolved by 16. Then again, my 16 has also had it replaced by the PO, so some 16s obviously still suffer from similar fate.

Yes But I'm curious if anyone knows if the replacement condenser was revised to prevent it from cracking in the future?

Yes, that's why the later trucks are not as prone to the failure than 14-15s.

The issue involves 2014-2017 trucks. Looks like PN: 23141861 is the OE part and 84211191 replaces that. I found Dealer parts dept. notes in the Retail Inventory Management (RIM) program saying last PN no longer fits 2014-2016 and to use 84243590. It looks like the revised part has some reinforcement where the original ones were cracking.

Thank! I will definitely check the part #'s on the invoice when I get my truck back.

Re: AC Condenser... Known Issue???

Postby ALinCarolina » Apr 21 2021, 12:32am

Just replaced the condenser in my son's 2017 1500 last weekend. I saw on youtube that it is a known issue at the three spot welds on the sides. replacement units have more welds to distribute vibration. I called the dealer who said it is only warranty covered for 3 years or 35,000. The unit was empty of refrigerant so I put a little in and sure enough my sniffer picked it up leaking at the upper spot weld. Ordered a Chinese replacement from carid. One downside is that the R-1234yf is expensive. Working great again presently.
