Heated steering wheel not working

Heated steering wheel not working

Postby JustBerard [OP] » Feb 11 2020, 12:48am

hey everyone!
the heated steering wheel in my truck stopped working a while ago and i was just wondering if anyone on here has had an issue similar to me.
when i click the button on the steering wheel for heat, it lights up for ~2-3 seconds then shut off. it did start working for about a week not too long ago but has since stopped working again. i went to the dealer and they said it has a faulty element and the wheel would need to be replaced.
if theres an easy fix id rather go that route instead of ordering a replacement wheel online or through a wrecker.

thanks in advance for any and all help!

What year truck? Avatar picture is of an 07-13 and your info shows a 2017.

If it is the element...that is embedded in the steering wheel itself and nothing can be done to repair it.

It's a 2017, I haven't gotten around to changing my avatar on here yet.

I'm worried it might be the element. Weird thing is that it started working for a few days after I brought my truck in for the rear window defrost recall. Might just be a coincidence though.

We had the same thing happen with the rear defroster on a car; would work for 10 seconds or so and shut-off. It was a bad relay.

Sounds like you might squeak into the 36 month warranty depending when you bought it, if the mileage is over the 36,000 you could argue that a steering wheel is not a mileage influenced component and kick it up to GM Customer Service if you need to

I'm just over the warranty mark. It actually stopped working while it was under warranty. I might be able to talk to gm directly and see if they'll remedy the issue free of charge. Thanks for the advice guys.

Your initial post said you went to the dealer and they said replace steering wheel. Why didn't it get done under warranty then?

I was over the warranty mileage at that point. By about 1000 miles. Dealership wouldn't do it.

New ones look to run anywhere from $200 (cocoa dune color) to $250 or so for black.

I saw this which if in good shape you could swap out your airbag...etc. Only $145 https://www.ebay.com/itm/2018-GMC-SIERR ... 3223956365
