Towing with 3.0 Duramax

Difference between 2wd and 4wd

Towing with 3.0 Duramax

Postby Dubesrus [OP] » Dec 18 2019, 12:57am

From what I can find, the tow rating on the 2wd 3.0 liter is just under 7K, while the 4wd is over 9K.
Same rear end ratio, same transmission, wheels and tire size...
What makes the difference?
I have an RV that gets a bit above 7K when loaded. My T****a handles well, but poor fuel mileage. The T****a has almost 200K miles, and am looking to replace it in the next year.
Any clues on who to ask about this?

Maybe the dealer?

You could also walk around and look at the GVWR stickers in the driver's door jambs and compare the data on payload, etc.

Looked at GM website for info.
GVWR does change a couple hundred pounds.
Towing rating changes over 2,000 lbs.

The 1500 is a full size, not mid size.

The ratings I am looking at are both tow ratings for Silverado or Sierra 1500 3.0L diesel powered trucks.

2wd... under 7,000 lbs
4wd... over 9,000 lbs

Is there a GM engineer on the forum who can explain?

Towing with 3.0 Duramax

Postby ferraiolo1 » Dec 19 2019, 1:28am

The previous 1500s capacity would vary from 5500 to 9400 based on configuration.

I believe most 4wds have a higher rating bs 2wds. There is info in the owners manual. It’s been a while since I’ve looked at it.

There are 2 axle configurations on the new 3.0. To get over 9000 pounds you need the max trailering package that comes with the 3.42 rear axle vs the standard 3.23. The 3.23 even on 4wd only does 7200. The trade off with the 3.42 is you will lose 4mpg in fuel economy. It is definitely something you need to pay close attention to when shopping if you need the 9k capacity.
