Engine swap: 2018 L83 into 2014 doable?

Engine swap: 2018 L83 into 2014 doable?

Postby Foghorn [OP] » Apr 18 2020, 1:19am

New member here and would appreciate any tips.

I’m considering a drivetrain swap for a 2014 GMC SIERRA SLE 4x4 with 349,000 Kms on it.

I can purchase a used L83 5.3L from a 2018 Silverado with 20,000 Kms and was wondering if this is just a plug and play swap? The 2014 has the same engine.

I’m also looking at swapping the 6L80 for one from a 2015 Silverado. My understanding is that the TCM is VIN locked, is that actually the case. If so then my options are to have the TCM flashed, buy a new TCM with the correct VIN, or reuse the old TCM.

Any tips would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Motors are identical so it will be a bolt in swap. Just keep your ecm on your truck.

What trans does your truck have? None if the 6 speeds are locked. The newer 8 speeds (2017+) are locked and need to have the TCM modified to be tuned. The 6 speeds do not.

Thanks for the quick reply 19trax95.

Good news on the engine swap, I would indeed keep the same ECM.

The tranny is the 6 speed 6L80. So no worries about a non matching VIN in the TCM?

Cheers

It's not locked by vin.

However, given they changed some things programming wise in the ECM from 14 to 18, the 18 trans may need to be flashed to match the programming of the 14 ecm.

I do not know this to be fact, but I believe it may be the case. The tcm on the 6 speeds is located in the trans. Same as the older 4 speeds.

The 8 speed trans have the tcm on the firewall. Super easy to get at Haha.

The donor tranny would be from a 2015, I’m guessing it would not be too different programming wise. I could use GM TIS to compare the tranny flash versions.

What programmer or logger would read the VIN in the donor tranny.

That may work then. 2017 is when they changed things.

I read your original post wrong. I had thought you were getting the whole powertrain from the 18.

If I had the option of the tranny from a 2018 I may consider it, but so far the 2015 the best option.

When doing a search from trannies I come across these codes, what you happen to know what they mean?

4CKA
4CLA
5CKA
5CLA

Many thanks for your input.

Cheers
