With GDI the norm now in modern gasoline engines; do you think it'll evolve further into "compression ignition" like diesel engines???

In GDI engines; as the fuel is injected into the cylinder, and the spark plug fires.....................is the spark igniting gasoline vapor or gasoline mist??? In throttle body and port fuel injection; the gasoline mist vaporizes prior to entry into the cylinder......................but what about GDI where it's injected as a mist???

The fuel which is sprayed as fine droplets, stays in a liquid state. The fuel is directed at a fuel bowl on the piston top to catch and direct fuel to the center of the piston top.

But does it vaporize, or remain a super fine mist???

Just how far do want this conversation to go? Have you ever looked into homogenous and stratified combustion differences? Start with Smokey Yunick’s hot vapor engine and go from there. That is where we are headed if gasoline is the fuel used.

Never heard of it. I was thinking about this while working today. Seems a logical progression given direct injection and higher injected fuel pressures we're seeing in gasoline engines.

I would think pre-detonation would be an issue trying to do compression ignition with gasoline.
