Looking at a 2015 LT with 5.3 but GDI issues scares me

Looking at a 2015 LT with 5.3 but GDI issues scares me

Postby hemlock [OP] » Apr 15 2018, 11:17pm

I'm looking to get a new to me truck. I'm a crossroads with my current truck. Either trade it in on something newer, or put a bunch of work into it. If I buy something newer I'd like to keep it 10+ years.

I've been reading alot about the carbon buildup issues on the intake valves due to GDI and it's really scaring me off. I've read different reports if an oil catch can voids warranty and even if it doesn't, I don't think it really solves the buildup problem.

I've also heard of a cleaning that GM recommends every oil change. That's going to add up over time to be ridiculous.

Are these issues a real concern or are people blowing things out of proportion? I could fix my current truck and wait a few years until someone in the auto industry figures out a way to do GDI properly, but I won't hold my breath on that one.

Gdi will always have those issues unless they start installing catch cans. If you find one with low enough miles and add a can I wouldn’t worry. No it doesn’t void the warranty. There are maybe less than ten threads out there where a dealer tried to do so with a camaro.

But for what the 15s are selling for you an buy a left over 17 for a little more.

The ecotec engine has been out for 4 years now and I have yet to see a single thread about issues caused by carbon build up on the valves. There has been a post here and there with some pictures of the build up but nothing that I've seen about failure. This is one of the first places people come with their problems, if it's not on here I doubt it's that big of a deal.

I'm guessing the majority of 15's would probably be close to the limit of a powertrain warranty anyways but like mike said you can get a holdover 17 for darn near the same price. It's amazing the price the dealerships are commanding for used vehicles these days. just get a brand new one and toss a catch can on it right away.

Engines won’t blow up due to it. The power will just slowly be degraded. Tons of threads out there about gdi issues on other engines that have been out longer than the ecotecs. Just have to google around.

I've also read conflicting reports on using the aerosol seafoam as well, what's the final verdict on that?

I found a 15 with 23k miles for 28k. Seemed like a good deal to me, is it not?

And that trucks powertrain warranty is up this year.

Hmm I must have been mislead...again. They told me the powertrain warranty was good for 100k or 6 years.

I bought a 2014 2lt double cab in 2014 for $34k. Sticker price was $42k. I would say paying a little extra for a brand new truck is worth it. Full benefit of warranty and you don't have to wonder how it was treated or whether or not someone dumped it because it was a lemon.

Pretty sure the 2015 powertrain was 5yr/100k. I believe they started the 5yr/60k in 2016.
