Oil Separator

Oil Separator

Postby Terrski [OP] » Sep 14 2020, 7:59pm

I was informed that the 2014 to 2018 5.3lt. engine could use a oil separator due to it being a direct injection motor. Because of the blow by that is feed back thru the head and thus clogging up on the intake valves because they are not being flush with gas because of the direct injection. Is this a good idea to install?

Yes, a catch can is a needed item on these direct injected motors.

The oil vapors and oil that come up through the PCV line will go into the intake and coke up the intake valves, slowly diminishing engine power and causing valve seat wear.

A catch can helps to keep things as clean as possible

Thanks for the response. Now will this void my warranty by any chance. Since I asked several dealer service dept. about the separator and they did not know what I was talking about. " never heard of that issue" they say.

You can take them off in less than 5 minutes so I'd recommend just removing it if warranty is of concern

But I have only read of one case of warranty being an issue with a catch can, and that was on one of the camaro forums.

Really depends on the dealers. Some are a$$holes, some are not. The dealer I used, (and still do for some work because they are reputable and honest,).knew exactly what the Catch Can is, and what it does, and didn't care if it was there or not.

if you remove the pcv hose assembly completely from where it connects to the valve cover and the intake, and replace all the hose with the proper size fuel line, removing your catch can and reverting to factory condition, with factory parts takes less than 10 mins.

and will only cost you an extra (maybe) $10 when you install it the first time, depending where you locate the catch can at.

then its just a matter of giving them the finger when you take it in and smiling knowing that you're smarter than the service writer behind the counter who may or may not be looking out for your best interest in the first place.
