Using 91 octane on 87/89 tune

Using 91 octane on 87/89 tune

Postby Savinhillspyda [OP] » Mar 04 2016, 3:34am

So I was reading some forums and I saw that someone had said a 89 Lewtune performs like the 91 canned tune. If this is true, would running 91 or 93 be beneficial while staying with the 89 custom tune for now? I'll eventually switch, but I'll wait for the warmer weather to get a better data log.

I'd say any of the lew tunes would outperform any of the canned tunes.

I get that. I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to run the higher octane with a lesser tune until it warms up enough to get an accurate data log

Running higher octane in any engine or any tune than is needed to eliminate detonation does not yield more power or any benefit.

If your truck is not specifically tuned to run higher octane fuel, you are not getting any benefits. The only thing you are doing is making your wallet lighter if you use higher octane fuel. Running higher octane gasoline in a vehicle not specifically set up for that grade does nothing.
If you are looking to get a tune, run the proper gasoline so whoever is reading your datalogs is getting the correct readings and numbers.

Running higher octane for a vehicle that is not designed for it is not a "treat" for your truck. If there isn't any knocking at lower octane, than you are using the correct fuel. Also, higher than specified octane fuel can cause your truck to not run properly as it takes extra heat to burn and thus doesn't burn entirely and can cause a loss of power.

And you never want to run lower octane than what your tune is set up for..

replies above ^ ^ ^ are correct on all accounts..

if tune is not made for the higher octane, then no sense or benefit by using the higher octane gas..
