Backlighting 2020 Silverado Grill Letters

Postby Speed Nut [OP] » Sep 17 2020, 12:38am

I have a 2020 Silverado and want to put amber LED’s in the grill to light up the CHEVROLET. I’ve seen on YouTube a company that installs emergency lighting and they did this for a client. I contacted the company, but they were not going to make this a package nor were they willing to share their diagram/instructions on how they installed the lights. I totally understand that.

I know close to nothing about LED lighting and am hoping someone with knowledge of LED’s would be able to give me some insight/direction on what I would need to install them and have a separate switch to operate them.

GM actually makes a factory illuminated one you can get: https://www.gmpartshouse.com/oem-parts/ ... L4QAvD_BwE

Another option I saw: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/orc- ... PwQAvD_BwE

As far as install...you need a power source which there are some ignition sources under the dash. And to install a switch to turn it on and off. Probably no need for a relay for low power item like an LED light such as those. And just run the power through the firewall to the emblem.

I really appreciate you taking the time to find those links. Unfortunately my grill doesn’t have a bow tie. My grill looks like this.

I have done something similar to the JAGUAR on the trunk of my car. I had to cut each letter out. Mold clear plastic rosin to fill the letters back in to keep the water out. Then use a LED strip to backlight it.

I got a bit fancy and changed the color and blinked it when put in reverse and changed to red when the brakes are on.

Not too hard but long and tedius project.

You would need to see how it is all put together to determine how hard it will be.

You can see through the letters into the grill right? You would just need to make some brackets and have a backer board/plate of some sort to mount LED strips on then wire the strips to battery/switch

The prices of those two linked items are atrocious...lol

I did a "glowtie" mod on my 2006...the Bowtie was actually two pieces, so I was able to split them apart and stick some LED strips in the middle, and then I ran the wires through some loom to the fusebox for power, one ground, and a 3rd wire to the cab for a switch.

I never use it though, and as cheap and easy as it was, I wouldn't do it again.

But you could see about the letters coming apart, or if you just stick LEDs behind it without a backer you'd also light up the radiator...might as well stick a flashlight in there at that point...lol
