Installed the Eonon GA7180 with dash cam today

Postby nealinator [OP] » Jun 03 2017, 8:53pm

I got everything all installed and running. Went pretty well. There is no info at all included with the radio. There is some info online...but even that is marginal. But some of it is fairly straight forward. I will document what I came across in an effort to help those who do the same.

Started the morning with this pile of stuff:
20170602_222812.jpg

Here is the before shots:
20170603_090336.jpg

20170603_090332.jpg

Began by pulling off the trim around the radio. This is always nerve wracking to me...they put like 9 or 10 clips to hold it on...not sure why...i think it could withstand a shuttle launch...
20170603_091551.jpg

After removing all the screws on the sides, lower aux plug/switch panel comes out as well as the hvac controls. Then the radio slides out.

I then started attaching all the wires to the new radio unit.
20170603_104915.jpg

There is a grey plug in the harness (mine is the Bose set up) that is not used since I have no video on the oem radio. My set up has me tapping into the video feed over by the drivers foot kick panel. I used Posi-tap to connect to the positive and negative video feed from the OEM camera. I just dug through my old cables and found a single RCA cable and plugged the male end into the female plug going into the back of the radio. Then I cut it to length after routing through the dash and stripped back the shielding.

20170603_120057.jpg

I put a piece of shrink tubing around it to protect the wires.
20170603_120853.jpg

Installed the dash cam up behind the mirror. The wires fit nicely into the mirror channel then ran across the headliner and down the A-pillar.

Well here is the rest of it...since there seems to be a limit of how many attachments you can upload...

Next I worked on routing the remote microphone along the A-pillar. I was going to put it in the little speaker looking hole up by my head on the headliner...but that is some sort of sensor...it was a pain trying to get the cover to snap back in because once removed...the piece behind the headliner is loose and it is very hard to get your hand back there to hold it in place. I decided to just have the microphone come out at the top of the A-pillar trim which is a good front location for speaking to anyway.

20170603_111135.jpg

I zip tied the microphone and the dash cam wires to the stock ones...mainly because i have hundreds of little zip ties...gotta use them up.
20170603_104858.jpg

Here is that little grill thing...don't remove it! haha
20170603_101047.jpg

I taped the microphone 3.5mm connection and the usb connection for the dash cam because they were sort of iffy and I did not want them to come apart in the dash.
20170603_105616.jpg

Got things all connected and turned it on to make sure everything was working before buttoning back up. Good thing, because had a loose plug in the back and it would not turn on at first!
20170603_113152.jpg

Started out sounding bit loud (or so I initially thought) when checking it out...so I taped up the speaker. Taping the entire array of holes seems too quiet...so after playing with it some, ended up with a few holes open. Ends up I could not hear the reverse warning beeps...so I took it completely back off. It is accessible so I may play with it more later.
20170603_112157.jpg

So in it goes...

20170603_135107.jpg

20170603_135112.jpg

I am working on figuring it out and will post back here some findings as I go.

So far I was able to access the front dash cam using the DVR button on the second page of the home screen. I had initially thought I would need to run a downloaded app to record video...but it seems that is already built into the unit. When I pressed record...it told me no usb found. I was not sure what that meant so did some digging. I thought maybe it needed an sd card, so I found a 32GB card (the max this unit will handle per the info) an put it in. Still the same issue...then figured out that you have to select the storage path in the DVR settings an I selected the SD card and it worked fine.

Sounds like you got a cool install there and one that you will be tinkering with for a long time with all kinds of new ways to use it since it is android based.

That looks really nice and clean! Almost (but not quite) stock. The interface looks cleaner than the Rosen CarShow 1210 I installed in my previous truck. How long does it take to boot? Does the radio come on automatically without having to select a function?

When I installed the Rosen, I routed the microphone up the passenger-side A-piller and along the front of the headliner to just about where the mirror was and attached it to the front of the headliner there. Hardly noticeable and it seemed to pick up my voice just fine.

That little grille you removed with the sensor is, I think, the sensor for the automatic climate control.

It has a fairly slow boot up time. I was expecting that based on what others said about it. It is annoying to some degree but worth the trade off to me for the cost. I was not looking for radio function much anyway. My primary concern was the backup cam. It comes on instantly when you put it in reverse..so I am happy with that.

I have not checked to see, but I think it stays were you set it to last. I just went on a little ride and was checking out the Google Map function as well as the dash cam. I like it a lot. The dash cam can be set to come on automatically...which I like. I am not sure if it records sounds...may just be video...which is good enough I suppose.

That does sound like a good spot for the microphone.

I was sort of glad I removed that grill I guess because the sensors that were on in looked very dusty and dirty...I blew them off with compressed air and they cleaned up nice.

Yeah...went pretty well. Ended up cracking the passenger side of the rear dash piece that is next to the windshield. Darn it. That thing is hanging on barely...lots of cracked clips on it and the dash. Annoying...

I am thinking of maybe getting a front cam down the road like you and Jasen have. Will be nice to see how close I am instead of going by feel...

So far the Android system is pretty neat...only issue is connectivity. Has sort of iffy connection to my home wifi so I had to use my phone as a hot spot to mess with it and download offline google maps. But it is just like a phone...with apps and you can read email and go to this site...

Thanks to the helpful comments on the other thread...I was able to log into the section that allowed me to change the splash screen to GMC. Have not done much else yet..

Here is a link to some info on operation of it:

http://i.sbo2.com/page/GA7180_EN.html

I am curious if I can change up the home page...I was able to add the DVR button to a second home page if you swipe to the left or right...but not to the first one. Will be playing with that some more. I don't care of the radio buttons to be on there as I will not be using that much...but the time is good to have.

Re: Installed the Eonon GA7180 with dash cam today

Postby nealinator [OP] » Jun 04 2017, 1:55am

I had a chance to somewhat time the boot up time for the unit to turn on. I was at about 20 seconds. Not real precise...I was just counting. But I had heard about 15 or so.

Also, I forgot to take a picture and make note of the location of the GPS sensor. I routed that over to the left side of the dash behind the instrument cluster. It is right up near the windshield behind under the dash panel. Stuck down with some double sided tape.

Also, I had removed the tape from the chime speaker...because I thought it was also muffling the reverse beeper...but now the door chime/seatbelt is loud but the reverse beeper is still very quiet. I think it must be driven by something else and may not go though that speaker either. I will try and contact Eonon next week and get to the bottom of that...unless someone else who knows chimes in (pun intended...).
