Wire Connected to Hood

Wire Connected to Hood

Postby UncleDavy [OP] » Jul 08 2018, 5:13pm

Hi Guys. I was detailing the engine bay this morning and this wire came loose from the connector. Can anyone tell me what this wire is for?

Thanks. I wasn't sure. I have heard that it could also be a hood sensor for the remote start. The wire corroded from the ring terminal and broke off. For now I just taped off the end and tucked it away. That won't affect anything will it? I will get a new ring terminal and rewire it.

Yes, it is just a ground wire for the hood. I don't think your truck has a hood light though. And I don't really know of any other electronic devices in the hood, but GM felt the need to ground it anyway. I have added LED hood lights to my truck that use that ground, so for that, I am glad that GM added it.

My truck does not have a hood light so it is definitely a ground wire. One end is connected to the fire wall and the other end is connected to the hood. I will see if I can pick up a new cable, if not then I will replace the ring terminal.

If you ask me, it is a pretty dumb solution for a ground. Any time you open or close the hood, you wind up flexing it right at the ring terminals. Any one can clearly see it is going to eventually fail. But, since it isn't a critical part, I guess GM isn't going to do anything about it. Would be interesting to know if the newer trucks are still the same. 2014 and up.

It’s just a bonding wire. You can buy braided bonding wire at any auto store.

Isn't the hood "grounded" by the hinges anyways? Or is it that the copper is more conductive, thereby more grounded?
