Has anyone cut the shark fin in half?

Postby barbersboy [OP] » Jun 12 2019, 1:52pm

Has anyone ever cut the stupid shark fin. I don’t use XM or On Star and my truck needs to fit in the garage. If I cut it will it leak?

The fin itself, or you mean removing it. If you cut it, and leave it open where you cut, yes it will leak...it's not a solid piece I don't think.

If you remove it, you'd have to do so cleanly and make sure you found something to fill the hole.

Can you notch the area where you pull in a bit, or is it too high?

Interesting. I think they're ugly and like the idea of making the shark fin's profile smaller by cutting down the height. But I don't know how that would affect it's performance. I do use XM so I wouldn't want that compromised.

I wish they made a replacement low profile cap. That would fix it. I can get a 1/2 inch by notching but I really need another 1/2 inch...(story of my life)

I knocked the fin off the work truck with a high pressure sprayer. It's just a wire coming through the roof. You could probably just tuck the wire in, unscrew the bracket, then do the appropriate fill and paint...if you wanna do it properly.

Patch and paint is the last option as it makes me sweat thinking about it-it’s my 3rd child...I agree with you though, that is the proper way to do it. I would have it professionally done and that is expensive.

if its just a small hole it could be pretty quick surely it wouldn't cost more than $100 for a decent shop to do it.

I agree.. might as well get it done right so you lower the chances of something happening again. For $100 I think it's not bad.

I might think you could remove the antenna from the truck, cut it off where you need to, and fill it with either that clear liquid resin, or fiberglass impregnated bondo, sand it, paint it to match the truck, and reinstall it.
If you ever decided later on that you wanted XM you could get a magnetic XM antenna that's about 1 1/2" square and about 3/4" thick.
