Re-Chroming Front Bumper

Re-Chroming Front Bumper

Postby Tavia716 [OP] » Sep 08 2017, 3:39am

Hello all,
Can anyone tell me the best way to re-chrome the front bumper on my 2000 Silverado? It seems the previous owner spray painted it black, and unfortunately didn't do a very good job. It also does not match my already chrome rear bumper either. Any ideas?

Naval Jelly. I used it once to remove spray paint from a stolen Chrome bike frame from a Police auction. Worked really well to reveal a 1980's Skyway frame. Now this will only work if the Chrome was never roughed up prior to painting and is still intact under the spray paint.

I'll have to take a closer look tomorrow after work, because I'm also not exactly convinced the chrome is still even there. The only thing telling me it is is the fact that the bumper looks completely stock, apart from the color.

Wipe some brake fluid on it, let it sit for a while and pressure wash it off. Polish any remaining with wd40 and 000 steel wool.

Salvage yard or aftermarket. The cost of rechrome would more than new

I agree with Zrock. My favorite body man told me once that these bumpers are not worth rechroming. Take a look at the back side it could be rusting pretty badly. Go to a junk yard or by new. Of course try the tips offered here first to remove the paint.
