Tail Gate leveling

Tail Gate leveling

Postby HCO41 [OP] » Jun 10 2021, 10:07pm

I'm trying to help out a friend that just purchased a 2021 1500 Sierra WT, std. cab, 8' body. He uses the truck in his small engine repair business and regularly loads a riding mower or snow blower into the bed. I made him a winch setup mounted across the front of the bed to pull dead units into the truck. He uses a set of 8' aluminum ramps. He traded a 2014 1500 with same specs. The Problem is the 2021 is higher than the 2014 and now some of the units bottom out as they transition from the ramps onto the tailgate, (too high break over angle). It seems to me that within the last year someone on this forum did a detailed write up on modifying his tailgate so it lies flat and parallel with the bed. Can anyone help me find this thread? Also, does anyone make longer support cables which would help?

The tailgate should be basically on the same plane as the bed when it's open.

So I take it you mean that the entire back end of the truck sits higher. There are several ways to fix that.

Easiest would be to remove the rear block if it has one. That will drop the back end down a bit. Likely won't be totally level with the front, since the factory blocks are only like 1.25".

If it doesn't have a block, you can get drop shackles and lower the rear that way.

Neither option will change the load capacity of the truck or anything like that, only the height.

Give the truck a Carolina Squat. Should solve that issue.

Are you saying the tail gate isn't parallel with the bed when it is down? Never seen a pickup like that but guess it could happen if it had the wrong cables. Pretty sure both Lowe's and Home Depot both have cable and crimp connectors that would work to make longer cables. Just need a good way to do the crimp.

Tailgate leveling? Didn't know it was a thing. Mine have always been level with the bed.

Probably need longer ramps or load stuff up in a ditch .
take some small ramps for the truck to drive front tires up on
Get longer cables for tailgate to fold down lower?

Didn't Mike, (ferraiolo1,) have some kind of funky tailgate that may work for him?

first and foremost your tailgate should lay as flat as the bed. Find out why and fix that first if it does not lay flat.

Second get a different set of ramps like these, that are designed for that very purpose.

these are just one example, but longer than standard and arched.
