2012 OEM back up camera wiring

2012 OEM back up camera wiring

Postby 2013sierrasle [OP] » Sep 02 2013, 3:37am

I just obtained an OEM rear backup camera pulled from a salvage 2012 Silverado, and would like to install this in my 2013 Sierra SLE, and use the rear view mirror monitor. I have looked everywhere for a diagram to identify the six wires that go to this unit.

I have red, yellow, white wires going to one connector, and grey, black, and tan wires in another bunch. I am also curious if this OEM Panasonic camera is a 6 volt unit like those in the Tundras. Has anyone tied these factory units into a RCA connector? My truck has the dark blue and white wires present at the existing onstar mirror.

If you cannot find the answers on here or web, you can always call dealership and talk to a mechanic or service rep.

I found this schematic, but not all of the colors match up. I really do not want to fry the camera.

The wiring colors do not match up on this one either.

I tapped into blue and white wires at the kick panel to get the camera on my stereo screen if I recall correctly.

My Sierra SLE has the wires from the rearview mirror to the drivers side kick panel, so that end is OK. I just need to wire from that connector to the rear of the truck.

I will need this adapter that uses a RCA female end to tie into the blue/white wires:

The wires from the camera may be different colors than those in the GM wiring harness.
Here are the three connectors used...
This is for the rearview camera option:

1 GY/D-BU Camera Video signal (+)
2 WH Drain Wire
3 L-GN Backup Lamp Relay control
4 GY/OG Camera Video signal (-)
5 BK Ground
6 PK Ignition voltage

These two are for the monitor camera options:

1 L-BU Camera Video Signal (-)
2 BK/WH Ground
3 D-BU Backup Lamp Relay Control
4 NA

1 WH Camera Video Signal (+)
2 GY Drain Wire
3 NA
4 PK Ignition voltage

I would guess that your camera came off a vehicle with a monitor vs. a rearview mirror display. At least that is what I would surmise looking at the GM schematics.

Re: 2012 OEM back up camera wiring

Thanks to member Welcher774, I think I have this figured out. GM did indeed use different colored wires on the camera end versus the vehicle harness.

The video positive is yellow on the camera harness side, and grey/dk blue on the chassis harness side.

The video negative is brown on the camera harness side, and grey orange on the chassis harness side.

The reverse wire feed is grey on the camera harness side, and light green on the chassis harness side.

The Ignition positive feed is red on the camera side, and pink on the chassis harness side.

The ground wire is black on both sides.

The shield wire is white on both sides.

What I find odd is that the camera is energized by two sources. The ignition positive, which is on when the key is on, and the reverse feed, which is energized when the truck is placed in reverse. Aftermarket cameras only get power when the vehicle is placed in reverse. Is this due to the fact that the reverse lights are illuminated when the vehicle is unlocked/locked with the key fob when it's dark out? Any thoughts on this?

As for running wires front to rear 3 options go back to salvage place you got camera and ask to remove the harness it runs on driver frame rail. Option two make your own by taking the different colored wires put In a drill and other end in a vise or have someone hold them spin the wires until all twisted together then tape em up or put in flex loom. Option three go to stereo shop and buy "speed wire" by stinger it has multiple pairs of wires with a rubber outer sheath on it. Stereo shops use it when installing amps and speakers cuts down n amount of wires needed and a remote on wire for amp as already in the bundle. Good luck let me know if you need anything else.

When you get this all set up and installed could you possibly make a list of everything that you purchased from the junkyard and maybe what it all cost you? I am thinking of doing the same thing.
Also did you get the mirror with the screen in it from the junkyard also?

Thanks,
Ron
