Adding a second phone

Adding a second phone

Postby Contra [OP] » May 21 2020, 1:50am

I have a 2017 Silverado with the 8" screen. I want the factory GPS but it is way more than I want to spend right now. If is hook up my phone through Android Auto it works great for the NAV. But I don't want to have to do this to get the NAV to come up all the time. I was wondering if I have a second Android phone with built in GPSr, that means it has a GPS sensor in it and works independently of data towers (triangulation). I want to have a GPSr to get signal all the time and feed it to my Android Auto without having to hook up my phone.

It is a way cheaper alternative to adding a $500-$1200 HDMI unit.

But I don't know if it will "disconnect" my phone when I hook it up as I like to get/make phone calls via voice control. Has anyone tried this?

No. You can’t have two separate devices connected. One or the other.

Bummer, I was just hoping for a way to do the NAV cheaper than the "factory" unit.

Youd need (or want) a data plan on the phone your using for nav anyway. Otherwise you'll need to save an area of the map and do it that way. And then you wont have live traffic and updates.

It's so easy to just plug your phone in when you want to use nav. When I had my 17 it just became a habit to plug the phone in every time I got in the truck.

It charges your phone and nav and music is all right there ready if you ever want it. I can't wait to dump the factory nav on my 15 and upgrade to android auto. Every time I use the factory nav I hate it more and more lol.

If your phone has a built-in GPS you don't need a data plan. But I understand what you're talking about as far as updates.

Not through google maps you cant. It needs data in order to generate the routes.

Only way around it is to download areas of the map via wifi at home and then you'll be able to navigate those areas with just the GPS signal.

Perhaps you have another app you use but the most common ones (google based) need data.

You can download the route via WiFi and then use it in your truck on a phone without a data plan. As long as you stay on the same route.

Same way your phone gps works when you loose service.

BUT if you have to detour or miss a turn, you’re screwed, as it will try and reroute you, delete your map, and won’t reload.

Mike is correct....you can't do it. But what's the big deal with connecting the cable, anyway? Your phone will always be fully charged.

I keep mine plugged in just so I can have everything pop up on the screen and not have to rely on Bluetooth.
