Oshawa assembly plant closing

Oshawa assembly plant closing

Postby PSO [OP] » Nov 26 2018, 12:07pm

Just heard this morning on my way to work that at 10am today GM is expected to announce they are permanently closing their Oshawa assembly plant.

This is devastating news for not only the 2700 people that still work there but for the entire economy of southern Ontario as a whole. According to the news pundits there is no exact date set for the closure but Unifor the union that represents a majority of the workers at the Oshawa plant stated that they have received word that no new products have been allocated to Oshawa after December 2019.

Isn’t this the one that’s still making the 2018 trucks through 2019?

It also currently assembles the Impala and the Cadillac XTS.

Chapter 11 and a bail out sounds inevitable for GM as no one will buy their EV/Autonomous garbage proletarian vehicles. Maybe nationalization will work for them... and then MaaS (mobility as a service) will become a human right and any and all ICE and human driven vehicles will be outlawed.

Could be wrong but is this the same plant that the gov bailed out years ago?
Unfortunately the auto industry has been pulling out of Ontario for the past 25 years. Alott of towns were left in fending for themselves aver industry pulled out..

Not only this plant, but several others in the US and overseas.

I bet they kept their plants in all those right to work US states tho.

It just sickens me that seemingly every time you turn around there is news of more layoffs and job cuts, and not just in the auto industry but manufacturing in general. I’m old enough to remember the glory days of GM’s Oshawa plant, back when they had closer to 20k workers not the 2700 of today. Even still those are 2700 good paying union jobs and if you factor in the 7-9 spin off jobs that every one of those GM jobs helps support and your talking 18,900 to 24,300 other jobs that are potentially in jeopardy and in southern Ontario where much of its industry had already been ransacked those numbers are hard to swallow.

Other than the one in Arlington, TX and one in Tennessee I don't there are too many of them. Yet. After this exercise there might be, though. ;)

The cars being produced at those 3 plants are not selling well and production is down to 1 shift. Oshawa was finishing old body style double cabs started in Ft Wayne but those will cease at the end of 2019. Local dealers have very little cars and 100's of trucks and SUV's.

The Impala, Cruze, Buick cars and cars in general are no longer popular. I just looked at the inventory of 2 GM dealers here with a total of 285 vehicle on the lots, only 23 are cars.

I seem to recall Furd announcing similar car models being discontinued.
