Which Oil Filter is correct for 2014?

Going to change the oil in the new truck. Last truck (2012 Silverado w/5.3L Vortex) used a short ~3-1/2" high oil filter. The new truck has a longer oil filter from the factory. I guess it's a Delco PF63, not sure but that is what the manual calls for. Changing to Mobil1 EP and want to use the Fram Ultra Synthetic filter which is ~3-1/2" high, as the 2012 was. Is the installed Delco filter longer because it is a lesser grade filter or is the shorter Fram filter not good for this motor? I think the Fram is OK but curious about the original length filter.
Also, the oil filter change on the 2012 motor was a PITA because even after putting a screw driver through it and waiting until it stopped draining, when removing the filter, oil always came down from the block. Messy as hell. Does the new motor have some type of check valve that stops this ?

I would use whatever the manual says to use.. There may not be an aftermarket to exactly match what you have yet. I would figure it's longer for a reason..

And on filters, I managed a quick lube place for a couple of years, so I changed many, many filters...I don't think I ever had one that didn't leak a little from the block, it's pretty much inevitable....Oil changes are messy. I just changed mine and wore some cheap gloves and a couple of rags over the filter when I turned it, and I got zero oil on my skin aside from a few drops on my arm. The rags absorb what comes out and they just get tossed during clean up.

First of all the 2014 is a completely new engine and the larger filter certainly has more capacity and it perhaps has different valving etc . > I would not use a filter from a 2012 application unless you can prove it is interchangeable with the larger filter >>> also the crnkcase capacity is greater in the 2014 8 liters or 8 1/2 us quarts >>>

Fram lists a filter for the 2014, it is the same for the 2012. I was not looking up a 2012 application to use. It would be nice if there was some data on the Delco filter like there is available on the Fram to evaluate it.

I haven't changed my own oil since I owned a 1972 VW so I'm a poor one to offer a opinion but I have always used OE filters when available but I have no issues with Fram , Wix, Purolator or any other premium oil filter as long as the application is correct >>>

May go with the Mobil 1 EP filter. Longer than Fram but shorter than Delco. It seems that since the Mobil1 or Fram filters use synthetic media instead of the Delco cellulose, either may be better than the Delco with Mobil1 EP oil
even if they are shorter.

It is indeed a PF63 which none of the auto stores had on hand in my area. It crosses over to the Mobile M-112 I believe, which was the only one available at this time. I checked a few auto stores yesterday and they have nothing for the 2014 trucks yet.

Went with the Mobile filter. Got it at Auto zone part is M1-212 for the 2014. Size is same as the OEM filter.
That's the one, sorry I couldn't remember the number. It's trash day today and I wasn't going thru the trash for the box; you will find that the oil change is real easy even for a 4x4. That's something GM did right this time around.

I personally wouldn't use any Fram filter, they are the bottom of the barrel in my opinion. I would stick with GM or WIX.
I generally agree with this statement, but the Fram Ultra filters are nothing like their orange cousins. They are very sturdy with wire backed synthetic media and metal end caps. Really well built.

Here's what the fram site shows as a cross-reference to the pf63

The Wix cross-reference is part # 57045

AC Delco has begun to replace their classic oil filter with ecores. I personally do not care for the plastic center core even though engineering says it is stronger. This is what the inner tube of an ecore looks like.

I prefer metal to this.

I'll probably go with Wix (Napa Gold) or Fram Ultra

I have to wonder if at some point all oil filters regardless of brand will have e cores?

Im glad someone started this thread because I am about to change my oil using Mobil 1 0w 20w and needed the AC Delco oil filter part#. Is the engine on the 5.3's covered with some sort of cover on the bottom of the engine making it harder to get to the oil filter and drain plug?

I dont have any ramps and I was just gonna scoot underneath there and do it myself...

No GM did a good job in my opinion making the filter and drain plug super accessible. Very straightforward IMHO

Agree 100% very accessible, they just forgot the magnetic drain plug. Have to find one of these now.

A filter wrench does make it easier to remove the old filter.
