I am at the point where I need to do the first oil change on my new 2012 Sierra with the 5.3L. How much oil does the 5.3L require? Also does anyone have any personal preference on oil brands and filters?

I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30, I buy 6 quarts and usually 5.5 quarts fills it up. You can get this at Walmart, it is Mobile 1's best synthetic oil.

and I use K&N oil filters

check this link out, you can get the k&n oil filter for $7.99 (which includes shipping). This is for a 1500 5.3l V8 Normally these filters are $15-20 at the local auto parts store.

This is the link to K&N's website where you can verify which filter will fit your truck

Everyone's got an opinion on this but from reading other threads here on the same topic Mobile 1 and Amsoil seem to be the favorite oils while Wix, ACDelco and Amsoil round out the top filters. Stick with those and you cant go wrong...unless you dont put in enough oil or forget to put the oil plug back in or something, haha.

after I broke the engine in 600 miles I put Royal Purple full synthetic in and use a K&N Gold filter ;up I run the oil 5K miles then will change the filter and add a quart. Am over 16K miles in my 2011 Silverado 1/2 Ton 4x4 and just dumped the whole sump tonight for a fresh fill.

At $9.29 a quart and $20 a filter it's an investment, but I wouldn't trust my baby to anything else but the purple.

I just changed mine out today at 5600 miles (2012 Silverado 1500 5.3L). I use 5w-30 Mobile 1 Full Synthetic (5 quarts) for $26 at Walmart, $8-9 bucks for the 1 quart. Depending on what I see on the self, I may go with the 5w-30 Mobile 1 Extended Performance (Brown/Gold Label). I use a Mobile 1 Oil Filter. When I change the oil and oil filter, I change the engine air filter. I use a drop-in replacement 33-2129 K&N Air Filter. I have two of them. So when I take one out to clean, I have one ready to go. They take some time to dry then you have to spray'm down and let them soak for like 20 min.

Tools you will need: Torque Wrench, 15mm Socket, go with the Oil Filter Cap made to be used with a torque wrench (it's better than using the oil filter claw wrench or the strap equivalent). For the Air Filter, I use the Torx 20 (star-shaped screw driver or if you have the balls to tear your hands apart - the allen-style types).

All of the major brand of synthetic and blends are great choices. Just look for sales on the brand you like and stock up! You will use it eventually. Same goes for filters. The Wix/Napa Gold (same filter), Mobil 1, Fram Ultra, etc. There is always a sale going on somewhere. I just use a synthetic I get from my commercial oil supplier at wholesale commercial pricing, shipped free right along with my business oil order. Been a great oil for my previous 2013 1500 5.3 and my current 2015 2500HD 6.0. I catch filter sales and buy several.

You really want to make the oil change job as easy as possible. I highly recommend a Fumoto drain valve as a replacement for the drain plug. Hook up a 3/8 hose to it, flip the lever, and a no mess oil drain. Filter is still going to be a little messy but at least oil isn't going to shoot sideways out of the pan with a valve. I have used them for years with Jeeps, pickups, semi trucks, ag tractors, etc They are a great investment.
