Local shop quoted me $250 for a pan drop service. Seems steep to me. I've thought of just doing it myself, but I'm not keep on potentially spilling a gallon of transmission fluid on the driveway if I screw it up. '17 6 speed. What's a fair price to pay a shop?

You can get a cheap fluid transfer pump and some tubing to fit down the dip stick and you can get most out that way before dropping the pan.

I certainly thought I could drop it without spilling but put down an old shower curtain and yep spilled some.

I used a big pan for doing the first service, and brazed in a drain plug while it was off, so following times I can drain the pan before dropping it to replace the filter.

$250 is about right, they gotta keep the lights on. Is it worth buying the fluids, filter, scrounging around for the tools and lying on your back under the truck to do it yourself? As for me, it would depend on when you ask me! LOL

From what I've heard it depends on what you ask for and how good of shape the tranny is in. Around the world here is much higher than $250 but for something simpler it can go as low as $20. As always go in with protection.

It was just 15 years ago that a shop in Hemet and another in Temecula CA was honestly charging $100.00 for any FWD or RWD (not 4WDs though) reseal --- that's to drop the unit, pull the pump, replace any o-rings and gaskets, shift-shaft seals, VSS or cable housing seals/gaskets, front and rear seals, new ATP filter (good quality) and new fluid and road test.

I never offered that service in any of my shops, but a transmission service - drop the pan, new ATP filter and Corfam pan gasket and fluid was $49.95 in 1998-2000 or so.

My-my --- how the prices have gone nuts.

Personally, my cost-of-living has gone down or at worst, stayed about the same in some areas except maybe insurance and fuel --- but otherwise I don't like the price gouging going on.

Thankfully I am retired, but still in the repair business in my home-shop but I try to stay with lawnmowers and edgers and small-ish farm tractors. An occasional F450 or Ram 2500 gets in, but for simple things --- not any more transmissions though!

I'm seriously underwhelmed by the local shops workmanship and quality ...and yet overwhelmed by their prices.
