How to use the search feature

Postby #32 [OP] » Mar 14 2013, 1:07am

Welcome to SilveradoSierra.com. We're happy to have you as a member of one of the fastest growing truck forums on the internet and the only site focused on Silverado/Sierra trucks exclusively. Navigating the site may seem intimidating at first, but once you've been here a week you'll find yourself at home. In this "How to" well look at how to use the SilveradoSierra.com Search features.

One common concern about the search feature is that unless you know it's there, it is hard to locate. SilveradoSierra.com offers five ways to search.
First, there is a search bar located on the upper right corner of your screen. This search feature will always be there no matter how far down you scroll.
Second, we offer a Google Custom Search bar. This is located in the center above the two advertisements near the top center of the screen when you have scrolled all the way to the top.
Third is the forum search bar. This search feature is located just right of the "new topic" button. It's a friendly reminder to do a search before starting a new topic ;)
Fourth is the search option in the User Menu. You'll find the user menu to the right of your screen. Within this menu you'll see links to both "your topics" and "your posts." Both search features within these links allow you to search information you've posted in the past.
Last is the specific member search. You'll use this feature when you remember a specific member said something and only want to search their post history.

Before we examine each search feature further there are a few tips every internet user should know about searching the internet. These tips work on just about every website. Please take a moment to read through the this website to become faimilure with some of the common methods of searching. This knowledge will not only help you navigate SilveradoSierra.com, but also your everyday internet browsing. Google internet search tips

Back to the SilveradoSierra.com search bars.

1. Suppose you want to learn more about DVD Navigation head units, but are not interested in anything made by JVC. Using the upper right search feature you would enter something like this: DVD Navigation -JVC.
After pressing the search button you'll see a number of results. Today there are 58. Suppose while reading through this list of threads you decide you only want to see posts about DVD Navigation head units that reference a touch screen. You'll then enter the word "touch" into the "search these results" bar located near the center left of the screen. There are now only 7 posts which fit all of your search criteria.

2. The second search feature is hosted by Google and functions very much like http://www.google.com. It is within this search feature that you can use all of the skills learned at the above link.

3. The third search feature is my favorite for quickly narrowing down a range of information. Suppose you want to know more about what seat covers people are using in their trucks. You'll initiate this search by opening what you think is the most appropriate thread. Once you've opened the interior thread you'll see the "search this forum" feature to the right of the new topic button. The results from this search will only display results within the interior forum. When you search for the word cover you'll find there are lots of posts which reference the word cover, but you really want to know about camo seat covers so you'll enter the word camo into the search these results bar and narrow the search to only 9 posts (today).

4. The fourth search options are located inside the user menu. After clicking the "your topics" or "your posts" link you will be directed to a list of posts you have made. For this how to, we'll focus on the "your posts" link, but both function the same. Once you have clicked the "your posts" link and are directed to the list of posts you've made you can either scroll through however many pages you have, or simply enter a key word into the "search these results" feature near the upper left of the screen. In this example, I searched my profile for the word clazzio which brought up every post I've ever made referencing the word "clazzio." Now, instead of sifting through 1,700 posts to find my comments I only have to sift through 13.

5. The final option for performing a search requires you have a knowledge of who is posting what information. In this example we know Machster69 posted something about "windshield tint" but cannot remember what he said and have reason to think it pertained to the question. You'd initiate this search by opening up Mach's profile page and clicking on "search users posts." As of today, Mach has 6,199 posts which cannot be practically sorted through in a reasonable time frame. By entering our topic, "windshield tint" in the "search these results" bar we will filter all 6,199 results to only those posts that contain the words windshield and tint. We have now filtered all 6,199 of his posts to just 4.

The key to navigating any forum is patience. Take your time, start your searches with the most broad terms you can think of and try to narrow the search down from there by getting more and more specific. After a few efforts using the search feature you'll find all three of them are really very easy to use. One last tip. It is okay to start your post with something similar to "I tried to search, but couldn't find what I was looking for..." If you sincerly tried to search but still didn't find your answer. A simple statement like this tells our members you honestly gave it your best shot trying to find the answer yourself. You'll find a much more positive response when putting forth your own effort.

Thanks for reading,
Dave

I thinks this needs to be bumped on regular basis or something....I answered at least a half dozen new guys questions lately by simply doing a search that they could've done their self!!!
