Weird squeak from rear of truck

Weird squeak from rear of truck

Postby gapple12 [OP] » Jan 24 2020, 9:27pm

My 2017 silverado has started this squeaking noise coming from the rear of the truck. It only squeaks when I accelerate from a stop and then when I come to a complete stop. I thought at first it was a shock or leaf but I can not simulate the squeak from bouncing up and down on the truck. It only goes away when it rains or the truck gets wet, making me think its a area that needs some lubricant.

My guess would be the driveshaft universal joint at the rear differential.

Its more of a kreeek sound, similar to a squeaky spring or leaf. I have traction bars on there so it cant be that the leaf is moving much at all. I am going to pull the tracking bars off this weekend and see if it gets louder.

So I have narrowed this noise down to the rear of the leaf spring on the drivers side. Even though I have traction bars, my leaf still seems to flex a bunch when I accelerate and come to a stop. Had a buddy watch it and verify the noise. Is there a bushing on these or a mount that could be loose on the rear of the leaf where it attaches to the truck ? I have sprayed WD40 all over it and it didnt seem to help, maybe a little but just came back.

spray the area that you suspect is the culprit with WD40. Then drive it. If the squeak goes away, you have the source pinpointed. Then, you can look for solutions to the problem. I seem to remember a thread on here about sticking some thin rubber buffers between the leafs in key spots that takes care of it.

Clean the area well with brake cleaner then use rubber. Don't use grease it will attract dirt and might get worse.
