I've been accumulating metal 'junk' out behind my barn for maybe 2-3 years, (old steel fence posts, shelves, broken card table chairs, old [ancient!] table saw that wasn't worth saving, two big electric motors [one was almost 60 lbs], etc.), thinking I'd take it to the metal recycler in town and pocket a few bucks rather than cutting stuff up and putting it in a dumpster.

So today was the day. I loaded-up my trailer and took the trip. The guy looked stuff over, told me which hoppers to throw it in, and weighed everything. I had just shy of 1,000 lbs... and got a whopping $10.00. I didn't know what to expect but thought maybe I'd get $20-$25 or so. It was so not worth it. At least the stuff will be recycled and not put in a landfill.

Yeah scrap is super cheap right now. Especially just iron and such.

Aluminum, copper, brass, stainless, etc is worth a little more, but not like it was even a few years ago.

Wow just enough to piss you off.. but that could be two 4 for 4 meals at your local Micky D's.

I keep eyeing a 30ft maybe longer goose neck that's just sitting by some guys shop, has been for several years now. It has a bunch of junk on it, and he has another one he uses. I would love to convince him to buy it for a couple hundred and pay someone to pull it to a junk yard to unload and then drop it at my house... I could clean it up put some new tires and redo the deck and make a profit. As long as the axles aren't bent.

Need to make friends with a 3/4 ton truck owner that has a gooseneck hitch ha

single income, baby, adding on to the house, and paying for the wife's specialist degree.. So saving up for a down payment to get me in a payment range we are comfortable with. Maybe this time next year lol

If my dad would just go ahead and get him a hitch I would ask him to drive up, would even grill him a steak and have some cold beer ready

and the only way to get the good rates on the individual metals is to have it all seperated and graded.

if they have to do any breakage to seperate it out there, you might as well undo your belt and bend over - and bring your own lube or they'll charge for that too. they're only gonna give you bulk rates and you might as well almost have left it mixed in with the scrap iron.

thats how scrappers really make their $ - breaking everything down to its base metals and separating it. unwinding the copper off the motors, cutting the solder joints off copper pipe, no insulation on wire, etc etc

Nothing

No recyclers that I'm aware of will accept brass like that. They disqualify it as safety issues due to the risk of a primer or loaded round in the batch. Im sure its an insurance liability thing.

You'd have to put it thru a shredder first and take it back as just bulk shredded scrap to get anything out of it. If you could do that you'll probably do pretty well for it as thats considered top grade material at that point.

And thankfully thats how it works otherwise range brass for us reloaders would be unobtainium as everyone would just take it for the scrap value.
