Million mile 2007 Sierra - gasser

Postby intheburbs [OP] » Aug 25 2015, 2:53pm

This is cool. Dude drives 150,000 miles a year. That's insane.

Columbus native and Phenix City resident, Tommy Bush practically lives on the road. He is a parts coordinator for a fork lift company in Pennsylvania.

Bush bought a GMC Sierra 1500 back in 2007 and just recently rolled over to 1,000,000 miles, but the only problem is that the odometer will only go to 999,999.

Bush says he covers 17 states and usually travels between 160 and 170,000 miles a year and replaced the engine at 409,000 miles because it had a bad valve in it.

Tommy says he averages 150,000 miles on each set of Michelins he put on it. He has gone through six windshields, five gas caps, only two batteries, and almost broke down once.

“I came real close one time, changed the alternator on it at 840 something thousand miles. It went out up in the mountains and I actually made it to a dealership to get it changed. That’s the only time I come close to breaking down,” Bush says

This story is very cool. Truck just happens to be a nnbs Sierra. Probably doors have the 5.3 afm motor since he said he usually hauled 5,000 lbs on his trips. Went between 8-9k miles between oil changes. So the afm motors can go for along time. He said he replaced the engine at 400k or something close to that. Very cool story.

Did GM offer him a brand new truck? Some companies if you get a car or truck to a million miles (since owning it brand new) they will offer you a brand new free vehicle.

Cared for properly and running good full synthetic oil these all will go 400-500k miles. 2014 and up will wear out valve guides by 30k or so miles if allowed to coke up, but that is the only real issue w/the new GDI ones.

It still looks new so he obviously takes care of it. I would love to know details about the oil he uses and how often and what he uses to service the tranny, rear diff and such. I think a Volvo holds the record at around 4 million and Volvo gives that guy a new car at every million mile mark.

I generally run our personal/shop vehicles for 200-300k plus miles and always run a good full synthetic oil. If Walmart carried Pennzoil pure platinum or Quacher States best. If a premium Amsoil or similar.

Zero sludge deposits when running a good full syn religiously. M1 is OK, but at the bottom of my list.

Just read this article this morning online, that's a crazy amount of driving. I'm at 85k on my 08' with the 5.3l, if I get to 250k I'd consider myself pretty fortunate. I got the range afm delete at 42k (when I bought the truck) hopefully it won't give me issues. But 409,000 on one engine then 600,000? Nnbs representing lol

Any of the LS based engines if properly broken in when new (hard break-in) and then only running full synthetic oil (Amsoil my choice) will run 500k plus miles. You will replace brakes, belts, alternator and other parts that will wear out, but engine and trans and rest will last. Trans fluid changes every 40k miles and they last as well. Dex6 is the syn version of dexII. Proper maintenance is critical.
