Newbie question, RPM at 70 MPH?

Postby W2HX [OP] » Jul 21 2021, 1:05am

Hello all,

I am not an owner of a Silverado, however, I have a vehicle that has had its power plant replaced with a LC9 5.3L / 6L80 from a 2012 Silverado 1500. I feel the gearing isn't quite right. For example, in 6th gear at 70 MPH, I am getting 2500 RPM which I feel is too high for cruising.

My question is, what would a silverado 1500 owner expect for RPM at 70 MPH?

I realize that my vehicle's gearing will be TOTALLY different than a silverado. I am not in need of advice on the gearing, I am just curious what the original vehicle would have experienced.

Thanks to everyone in advance for your replies.
Eugene

Depends what size tires and what gear ratio the truck has.

However, 2500rpm at 70mph would be about equal to a truck with a 4 speed trans, stock tires and about 4.30 gears.

4.10 gears on a 4 speed with stock tires get you around 2100rpm at 70mph.

Definitely not too high for a cruising rpm though. May be higher than some like, but I enjoyed it on my 01, cruising down the highway at 2100rpm, I could go to pass without even needing to have the trans drop to 3rd since the motor was closer to its "power band" if you will.

IIRC my 13 Silverado with the 5.3 / 6 speed combo would have been just under 2000 rpm’s. It had the 3:42 gears.

5.3l 6 speed with 4.11 gears and 285/70r17 tires @70mph I was at 2000-2100 rpms. @80mph its 2300-2400rpms.
even with the 4.56 gears now its @70 2200-2300 and @80 its 2500

like the above when I had stock 3.42s and larger tires I was still under 2000 rpms im pretty sure

I should have mentioned 275-65-18 tires.
