I want to get a 4l80e tranny for my 08 silverado 1500 ls which comes stock with a 4l60e and was wondering if I can take a tranny from any older 1500s-2500s? Is there different gens for the 80 for specific years? Thanks in advance

You'd have to make a new cross member for sure. And I believe a new drives haft as well. Then figure out the electronics.

I'd just have the 4l60e built stronger. It will be far easier.

Yeah I thought of that. Didn't know if it as worth a rebuild or just scrap it and upgrade

For starters you will need a new transmission cross member, new torque converter, set of transmission lines, a modified driveshaft with a larger yoke and a modified wire harness. Should be able to get away with a reflash of the ECM to control shifts. Since this is actually a pretty common thing in racing there are shops out there that know how to get it done quite smoothly. Can find a pretty decent write up here.
